VALEDICTORY SOCIAL A very large and representative gathering assembled at Knapdale to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs J. Ford, who are leaving the district after-, a life-long residence in and around Chatton. The chairman, Mr J. A. Cruickshank, on behalf of the residents of Chatton, Waikaka and Gore districts, presented the guests with a handsome silver tea set and walking stick, and in doing so expressed pleasure at seeing such a large gathering, which was proof of the esteem and respect in which they were held. Being acquainted with Mr Ford for almost 50 years, the chairman related some of the experiences and difficulties that had to be contended with in breaking in the land in the early days. Mr J. Moir, junr., presented Mis Molly and Miss Constance Ford with a Rhinestone neckle® each, with the best of good wishes from the young people of the district. Other speakers were Mr D. McKenzie (Waikaka), Mr W. Millar, Mr R. Gerken, Mr J. C. Dickson and Mr Brown (Gore), who all wished the guefts every success in the future. When Mr Ford rose to reply he was greeted with prolonged applause. The following instrumental and vocal items were contributed: Pianoforte duet, Miss Miller and Miss Graham; mouth organ duet, Messrs R. and A. Gerken; guitar duet, Messrs Burnby and Cruickshank; instrumental quartette, Messrs Rennie, Nicholson, Burnby and Cruickshank; songs, Miss Young, Mr A. Fergie, Miss Bellew, Mr W. Graham, Mr A. Bellew, Mrs F. Murray, Messrs Pringle, Dunbar and Paterson (Gore). The accompaniments were played by Mis Miller, Bellew, Gerken and Mr C. Miller (Gore). The floor was cleared for dancing to tiptop music supplied by a local orchestra.
