NEW STEAMER SERVICE

MELBOURNE-NEW ZEALAND. HOBART AS PORT OF CALL. Melbourne, September 23. The Minister of Customs, the Hon. -H. Gullett., denied that the omission of Hobart as a port of call for the new steamship service being established between New Zealand and Melbourne was due to the operation of the Commonwealth Navigation Act. Mr Gullett added that there was no truth in the report that the omission was due to the provisions of the coastal clauses of the Navigation Act. It was greatly to be hoped that Hobart would be included in the itinerary, for the new service would be of great advantage to Tasmanian trade. —Australian Press Association.
