WAIKAIA NOTES

The weather this month has been very cold and stormy, being more like winter than spring. The heavy boisterous wind blew over the chimney at the dairy factory last week. Warmer weather would be appreciated by the farmers especially as the factory will soon be opening. Farmers’ Union. The Wendonside branch of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Masonic Hall, Waikaia, on the 17th inst. The chairman (Mr A. J. Cameron) occupied the chair. There was a short discussion about the annual fee for inspection of electric motors and farm machinery. It was decided that it was a matter which should be brought up again at the next provincial conference at Invercargill. The chairman then introduced Mr Adamson, provincial secretary, and Mr Bowmar (Gore), who were present to give details connected with the establishment of the proposed superphosphate works at Ravensbourne. After both had addressed the meeting several questions were asked and a general discussion ensued. The chairman thanked Messrs Adamson and Bowmar and both were accorded a hearty vote of -thanks. Arrangements for canvassing the district for support were left with the chairman and secretary (Mr J. C. Paterson). Shooting.
The Rifle Club held the final match for the Hanson Cup and championship on Saturday, the 14th, at the butts. There were also some range competitions. There were eight shoots during the season for the Hanson Cup, the best three to count. Mr C. Collins was the winner by a good margin. In the championship also there were eight shoots and the final fifteen shots at 600yds. Mr C. Collins again proved the victor and wins the cup. In the range competitions there are three cups to shoot for—3ooyds, 500yds and 600yds. Following are the scores with handicaps for the Hanson Cup:—C. Collins 21 —401; A. Dickson 30—394; W. Ayson 18—389; J. Dennis 21—386; J. Moffitt scr.—-385; A. Christie 47—372; Thomas Moffitt 45—370; J. McDonald scr., 368; J. Matheson 43— 363; W. Millar 49 —361; R. Matheson 44— 345; T. Barclay 54 —337; Thomas Jeffrey 56—330; J. Jeffrey 48—288.
The championship scores are:—C. Collins 605; J. Moffitt 597, W. Ayson 587, J. McDonald 584, J. Dennis 579, A. Dickson 578, A. Christie 479, Thomas Moffitt 428.
For the three range cups the possible was 150 at each range. The winners were:— 300yds, J. Moffitt 132; 500yds, C. Collins 129; 600yds, W. Ayson 129.
With these matches terminated the club closes for the season. Tennis.
The Tennis Club held a euchre party on Tuesday, the 17th. Owing to other attractions there was not a very large attendance so the club intends to hold another on October 1. Mrs Andrew Christie won the ladies’ prize and Mr Grant the men’s. Miss Cavanagh won the ladies’ consolation and Mr R. Moffitt the men’s. A dance was held at the conclusion of the euchre, Mrs Gilmour (piano), and Mr Gilmour (violin) contributing excellent music.
