EARTHQUAKE CONCERT. (From Our Correspondent.) The entertainment in aid of the earthquake relief funds, promoted by a committee, of which Mrs Burstall was secretary and Mrs Reid chairlady, held in the Town Hall, Wyndham, on Friday evening was patronized by a full house. The Wyndham Pipe Band and Mataura Brass Band played in front of the hall prior to the opening. The programme was a varied one, the first half being a Gipsy camp scene provided by local performers and it was approprietly staged, coloured light being used for effect. The items were as follows: Opening Chorus, “A Gipsy Life” by the party, song, “Cloze Props” Mr D. Macpherson; song and chorus, “All by yourself” party; song, “A Heart that’s free” Miss Cranstoun; camp fire talk by the party; song, “Gipsy Dan” Mr Borrow; chorus, “Gipsy Love” party; song, Miss Cranstoun; song, “Jog, Jog, Jogging Along” Mr Stewart; mouth organ solo, Mr H. Mataura performers contributed the greater portion of the second half of the programme and again these were generously applauded. The Mataura Brass Band under Conductor A. Smith, played the overture “Scottish Airs” giving a very fine performance. Messrs Hart, Richardson and Darracott and Currie sang some original verses, with plenty of local hits, which caused real merriment to the audience. Mr J. P. Larkin’s humorous recitation was a good effort. Mr Currie sang “Mate o’ Mine,” encore “Friend o’ Mine.” The Russian dance duo by Miss and Mr W. Martin was neatly and cleanly executed and as a recall they danced an Irish Jig. Mr Darracott recited “Highwayman” with good effect. Messrs Hart and Richardson sang as a duet “Somewhere a voice is calling” and as an encore “Arise O Sun.” Miss Cranstoun sang “The Rapture and the Laughter.” Mr J. Hart sang “Because I was shy,” “Mrs Wash ’em and Party” was a humorous sketch with Mr Darracott as Mrs Wash ’em. The brass band played “National Airs” and led the National Anthem to conclude a successful entertainment. The accompanists were Mrs F. Ball, Mrs S. McDonald, Miss E. Duncan and Miss M. Reid. Mr George Hunter, chairman of the Wyndham Town Board, returned thanks to the public for their patronage and to the performers tor whom he called for cheers. A dance followed the music being supplied by Rabbidge’s Orchestra. The takings totalled £27 odd, and with expenses £7, their will be a surplus of £2O to go to the relief fund.
