THE AMATEUR TITLE MORPETH REACHES THE FINAL APPERLY DEFEATED (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) (Rec. 8.20 p.m.) Adelaide, August 28. Sloan Morpeth (New Zealand) defeated Apperly 8 up and 7 to play in the amateur golf championship. Morpeth and Ryan play the final to-morrow. Clem Hill, the famous international cricketer, was referee in the Morpeth-Ap-perly match. The former was three up at the end of the morning, fine driving and clever iron play both compensating for weak putting. Apperly was one up at the turn, Morpeth missing a two-foot putt at the sixteenth. The next was nearly halved in threes. Apperly, with a magnificent mashie, was eight feet from the pin, missing the putt. Morpeth holed a six-footer for a superb “eagle” three at the seventeenth (500yds). Morpeth got home in 35 strokes and round in 76, Apperly getting 80. Taking the twenty-first in a “birdie” three, Morpeth was four up at the twentyfourth and six up at the twenty-eighth. The game now took a sensational turn. Apperly duffed his drive in the drain, was short on the second from a stance on the footbride, then laid a screaming brassie on the green, almost 300 yards, and holed a 30-foot putt for par four. Morpeth followed with a long drive, a straight second and put down a 12-footer for a “birdie” three. Apperly missed a short putt at the twenty-ninth, Morpeth winning the match eight and seven. Ryan beat Hattersley one up. _ In the professionals’ match Bisset beat Thomson two and one; Ste Wart beat James eight and seven. The final will be played on Saturday.—Australian Press Association.
