VAGRANT VERSE
ECHOES. (Written for the Southland Times.) Only the cry of a gull as it seeks the sea; A homing cry, a long lone cry of pain; But swift as an arrow, and deep in tho heart of me A thousand echoes die and are born again. A thousand echoes die; but the dull pain lingers. 0, memories born of a cry that fell from above! You are knocking again with your cruel, insistent fingers On the tomb where we buried the worldworn shreds of our love! Go back to your graves! The gull has dropped from the sky; Where the cliffs rise sheer and the white waves churn and fret, He has sought his mate in the murmurous dark, and I— I am left to mourn for a dream I can never forget! —Evelyn Graye. Invercargill, August 28, 1929.
