MATAURA SOCIETY.

ANNUAL REPORT.

(From Our Correspondent).

The following is the annual report of the Mataura Horticultural Society for the year ended June 30, 1929. The 38th annual report shows that the Society has again experienced a very satisfactory year.

Main Hall: The receipts show a slight decrease owing to the present demand for entertainments which can be catered for in a smaller building. Nevertheless the debit has been reduced by £37, despite various improvements which have been effected during the year. It was occupied on 154 occasions. Stewart Hall: With outstanding rents amounting to approximately £B, which brings the total much higher than last year —this building is forging ahead as a popular place of amusement. It was rented on 80 occasions, as against 38 last year. Spring Show: This fixture was greatly handicapped by inclement .weather both before and on the day of the show. The exhibitors are to be congratulated on the excellent display despite the unfavourable weather. The entries were 395.

Autumn Show: Thanks are due to the ex-pupils of the Mataura School ‘for so largely assisting to make this event the success it was. The entries were 1663, compared with 1896 in 1928. Exhibits were of a high standard and competition in all classes was keen. Mrs. F. H. Wheeler carried off the trophy for most points. The membership dropped from 96 to 87. Cash and value donations are already in hand for the 1930 show.

The only item of a''general nature worthy of comment is the credit balance at the bank, which amounts to £134 6/5. The executive recommends that the question of paying another £lOO off the mortgage be discussed at the annual meeting. In conclusion, the executive wishes to thank the judges for the able and efficient manner in which they carried out their duties. Their decisions proved popular both with the public and the exhibitors. It is also desired to thank the donors of prizes, collectors, exhibitors, the Press, and all those who assisted at both shows, for their help and patronage.
