AUCKLAND TRAM EXTENSION.

CONTRACT v. DAY LABOUR.

Auckland, July 23.

When the Auckland Transport Board today was asked to adopt a recommendation that tramway extension works be done by contract, a lengthy discussion ensued, and it was decided to refer the matter back to the management with a recommendation that Point Chevalier extension be done half by contract and half by day labour. Mr E. J. Phelan stated that hundreds of men had registered in the belief that work would be available, but the contractor would not look at them.
