VAGRANT VERSE
THE PRAYER. (Written for the Southland Tinies.) Give me a little longer, Lord; I do not want to die. There are so many things to do before 1 say goodbye; . . This old brown earth, I love it so; its mils and woods and sea011 let- me longer steep ray soul in then; immensit y 1 I feel to-night such sacred peace to see the sunset spill Across the little huddled town its rose and daffodil. Earth is so wonderful; and I may nevermore return Give me, oh Lord, a few more years—there is so much to learn! I am so young to wish to change familiar things I love For that great Rest they prophesy in unknown worlds above. But dreams of youth and- laughing lips, tluj handclasp of a friend — Thy gifts I love and cherish Lord —oh leavo them to the end! The four winds sing their songs of life; and every little, bird. Deep in the fastness of my heart, must mints be left unheard? Oh, give me power of utterance, charmed . words to voice my song— And just a few short summers, Lord; X will not tarry long! —Evelyn Graye. Invercargill, July 21, 1929.
