Carrying a complete kit of burglar’s tools, including gelignite, fuses and caps, Robert Slade, aged 65, was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning after a sensational chase through the city streets. A sum of £67 was found on him and a large quantity of clothing in rooms where he lived was identified as stolen from shops recently. Standing at the corner at 4.30 a.m. Constable Whitehead noticed a well-dressed man leave the doorway of a shop in Hobson street and followed him down a side street. He called upon him to stop. He immediately ran, scaled a five-foot fence and as the constable followed was climbing a wall leading to other premises when the constable seized his man by the legs. After a scuffle the man submitted to arrest. Among the tools found on accused were two jemmies, tweezers, skeleton keys, gelignite, ignition caps, a spanner, torch, strong catapult with leaden pellets and material for lock-breaking. The goods found in his room included several suits and tailors’ cloth, boots, groceries, toilet requisites, dozens of race cards and other material was piled high on the floor and table.
