OBITUARY
ADMIRAL STOKES REES. (Rec. 12.10 a.m.) London, July 22. The death has occurred of Admiral William Stokes Rees, who commanded the steam reserve at Sydney in 1904.—Australian Press Association. Admiral Stokes Rees was born in 1853, and entered the Navy in 1866. He commanded H.M.S. Thetis at Delagoa Bay, South Africa, in 1900. MR H. L. BRITTAN. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, July 22. The death is announced of Mr Harry Lyttelton Brittan, aged 77, formerly inspector of the Bank of Australia. He is believed to be the first New Zealand born descendant of the Canterbury pilgrims and also the first European child born at Lyttelton. His father was William Guise Brittan, who arrived at Lyttelton in December 1851 in one of the first four ships sent out by the Canterbury Association to establish a Church of England settlement on Banks Peninsula and what were afterwards known as the Canterbury Plains.
