ANNUAL FIXTURE OTAGO DEFEATS SOUTHLAND GALLOWAY CUP RETAINED (Special to the Times.) Dunedin, July 20. The basketball match between Otago and Southland was played to-day on the new court acquired by the Otago Union. The surface proved a little slippery because of the wet of the previous few days having forced preparations to be delayed till the last few hours. The teams were:— Southland. Attacks: P. Calder, M. Wright and N. Beer. Centres: M. Royds, D. Dennis and A. Roberts. Defences: E. McCurdy, A. McGavock and M. Shand. Otago. Attacks: E. Logan, I. Marslin and D. Wilson. Centres: M. Fleming, B. Mattingly and C. Hamilton. Defences: R. Sunderland, J. Stephens and N. Clare. In the first three minutes Miss Logan had scored the first goal and Miss Marslin the second and third, but Southland quickly got going and obtained its share of the ball, its defence especially working well. Miss M. Beer scored first for Southland. A concerted attack by Southland broke down at Miss Beer. A miss-throw by Miss Logan let Southland back, but another beat M. Royds. Southland again attacked and just failed to score. The first ten minutes were reached with the score still 3 —l in Otago’s favour. Miss Logan and Miss Beer crossed the 12-foot line together and at the throw-up Miss Logan won out. Miss Beer was foiled by good defence by Miss Stephens, but immediately afterwards scored Southland’s second goal. Southland saved well from a strong Otago attack, but Otago came back and Miss Martin netted another goal, followed almost immediately by still another. Otago 5 Southland 2 Miss Sunderland then spoiled a good attempt by Miss Wright, but Southland overguarded in attack and were penalized. Southland then got a free throw for overguarding of Otago’s defence, but the shot failed. Miss Beer was soon successful in adding another goal for the Reds. , Miss Calder had a chance, but failed to take it and Otago strongly attacked, resulting in Miss Martin getting the ball in a good position, but failing with her shot. Miss Logan again scored shortly after, followed quickly by Miss Wright for Southland. Otago 7 Southland 6 Southland were now working beautifully together. Miss Marslin had another chance, but lost it and, the game rapidly shifting to Southland’s end, Miss Beer followed suit. The play was very even for a while, then Otago again strongly attacked, but were well opposed and Southland countered and got the ball to P. Calder, who was not successful. Miss Logan also was given a chance. Miss Shand foiled an attempt by Miss Marslin. Southland again attacked, but the game rapidly came back and a second by Miss Logan found the ring. Otago 8 Southland 6 A sporting shot by Miss Marslin just failed, then a good Southland attacking movement was spoiled by a miss-throw by Miss Wright, the play shifting again to Otago’s end. A lovely pass by Miss Wilson nearly resulted in an addition to the score. Otago again cleared and pretty work among the Otago shoots resulted in Miss Logan scoring once more. Miss Wilson failed in another attack and Miss Logan took a further opportunity and once again was successful. Almost immediately after Miss Marslin shot the last goal of the game, which ended with the score: Otago .. .. 11 Southland 6 SECONDARY SCHOOL GAMES.
