RIVERTON LEAGUE

MONTHLY MEETING OF EXECUTIVE.

(From Our Correspondent.)

The monthly meeting of the Riverton and District Progressive League, held on Thursday evening, was attended by Mr J. A. Martin (chairman), Mrs W. Gunnion, Messrs C. A. Caigou, T. King, 11. C. Johnstone, A. E. Willett, R. Hayles, J. Crawford and Dr. Gordon. Chairman’s Report. In his monthly report the chairman stated that the carnival had been a success, and the league and School Committee would benefit to the extent of SCO each. The sum of £163 odd had been taken, while the expenditure was £27. The function had been a success, and those associated with it had been thankful for their efforts. The £6O would be welcome, and the league would proceed with the more necessary work about the town and its environs. As regards the planting scheme, work was being pushed on. The holes had been prepared for the trees, which would-be placed in position when they came to hand. In this work the scholars at the school ivould assist so the expenses in connection with the beautifying scheme would be considerably reduced. It had been decided to remove some of the trees to the south side, where it was anticipated they would do better. A number of climbing roses would be planted on the bank at Dallas street, South Riverton, and repairs and a general clean-up would be carried out at Taramea Bay.—Report adopted. Other Business. Mr Crawford stated that he had an interview with Mr F. J. Linscott as regards maintenance gravel to street and road leading to the school, and instructionshad been given to have the work carried out. —Mr Linscott to be thanked. Dr. Gordon drew attention to the present condition of the Riverton-Longwood road, and he thought some attempt should be made to have it improved. A quantity of gravel had been placed upon it, but the quality was not suitable for present day requirements. In places it was exceedingly rough and dangerous, and was a disgrace to the place. In his opinion the whole road required picking over, and seeing that there were so many on the unemployed lasts men could be employed there. Mr Johnstone said that Mr Spears, on behalf of residents, had repeatedly written to the association regarding an improvement to the road, but the letters had been treated with contempt. Dr. Gordon moved that the Motor Association and the Southland League be written to asking them to use their influence with the controlling body in having repairs effected. Mr King seconded the motion, which was carried.

The chairman said that last year it had been decided to run musical and elocutionary competitions, but owing to some misunderstanding these had been allowed to lapse. He was in favour of these entertainments, and they were popular with the public in other centres. When it was remembered that small country districts could successfully conduct these gatherings he saw no reason why Riverton should not give them a trial. ■

Mr Caigou agreed with the previous speaker. The competitions were worth a trial. They could start on a small scale, and if they gave promise of being a success then they could launch out on a larger scale.

On the motion of Mr Crawford, the chairman, Mr Caigou and Dr. Gordon were appointed a committee to go into the matter of holding competitions, and bring forward a report for next meeting. Mr A. D. Angus and Mr Norman Beer were appointed to fill his vacancies on the committee, the remaining one to be made later on.

The following committees were appointed: —Beautifying: Mrs Gunnion, Miss Hunt, Messrs Martin and King; vigilance: The chairman, Dr. Gordon and Mr Crawford; Swimming Carnival Committee: Mrs Gunnion, Miss Hunt, Messrs Willett and Berndtson. Mr Crawford was appointed to take charge of affairs in connection with the North Beach. Mr Crawford indicated that a canvasser had been appointed, and he was in hopes that the league membership roll would be considerably inscribed this year.

Mr Johnstone drew attention to the seat near the rowing shed which had been damaged. Repairs should be effected for the spot was a favourite one with visitors, while in the summer it was a rendezvous for the children.

The matter of repairs and providing more adequate seating accommodation in the town was left in the hands of the chairman and Mr Willett.

Mr King said that if any improvements were contemplated at the present motor camp at the Point, South Riverton, he would like the committee in charge to make a visit of inspection of a more suitable spot at Waldeck. The present camp, he said, was not quite suitable; there was a difficulty as regards an adequate water supply, while stock grazing there were a nuisance to those camping out. If they took over the new one, motorists would be better satisfied, for there was a good water supply close by. Better shelter was provided, and in every way it was eminently suited for those who preferred to spend their holidays in the open. The property, he understood, belonged to the council, and he thought little difficulty would be experienced in gaining possession for the purpose mentioned. He strongly advocated taking up the new site at Waldeck, which could be made very comfortable at a small outlay, and in the opinion of several motorists who had inspected the locality it was preferable to the present one. It was eventually decided that the chair, man, Dr. Gordon and Mr King visit the locality and report at next meeting.
