DAIRY CONTROL BOARD
POLICY OUTLINED.
SAVING OF £250,000 CLAIMED.
(From Our Special Reporter.)
Dunedin, Juno 6
An interesting address on the work of the Dairy Control Board was given at the annual conference of the South Island Dairy Association to-day by the chairman, Mr W. A. lorns, who said he hoped he would be able to clear up the policy of tho board, which, he said, was now doing excellent team work and was proceeding slowly in an endeavour to overcome the opposition created through too hasty actions in the past. In the first place tho speaker dealt with the advertising policy of the board, explaining that the chief object was to improve the goodwill of the New Zealand product at Homo.- Dealing with the shipping of our produce Mr lorns said that since the establishment of the board a saving of £250,000 had been effected for the industry. The board was very disappointed with the ar* rivals of produce at the London market. It was essential, ho declared, that there should be a continuity of supply. The board’s desire was to arrange for a regular supply of produce to the market in preference to storing produce at Home for any length of time. A reduction in cool store rates had been secured and the saving effected in reduced marine insurance rates was more than the levies made by the board.
Dealing with the statements appearing in the report in regard to the board taking over the shipping arrangements Mr lorns said these were entirely wrong. The board’s object had been to do the greatest, good for the greatest number and the shipping was now being done more cheaply than ever before. When questions were invited, Mr D. Rutledge stated that since the board was able to compel the shipping insurance and cool storage companies, was it not possible to exercise compulsion on the merchants I In regard to prices he stated that, the producers would take the board into their confidence when they had confidence in the members of the board.
In reply Mr lorns said it was not practicable to dictate terms to the merchants. In reply to Mr John Dunlop, the speaker said that it was the intention of the board to continue to work in co-operation ■ with the Meat Board.
