PUKERAU NOTES.

Good winter weather still prevails, and although several severe frosts have been experienced, the days are warm and springlike.
Top-dressing of pastures has been proceeding without- interruption and the areas treated are extensive and are increasing every- year. Super, lime and basic slag appear to be the chief ingredients used so far, while the guanos and ephos phosphate are also giving good results. A few farmers are trying out sulphate of ammonia this year with the object of forcing an early spring growth. The local cheese factory has experienced a very good season, and the supply has kept up later than usual. The daily intake of milk is about. 600 gallons. Drafts of fat lambs are still leaving the farms and it is anticipated that the carry-over will .be larger than in previous years. Farmers’ Union. The monthly meeting of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union was held on Saturday evening last. Mr A. L. McDowell presided over an attendance of twelve members. Mr L. T. Woodfield, branch representative on the provincial executive, gave a full report on the recent provincial conference and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mr Woodfield advised that he would not be remaining in the district, very much longer, but was prevailed upon to continue to act as branch delegate until his departure. The chairman took the opportunity of extending the congratulations of all present to Mr F. Trapski on his re-election as representative for the Mataura riding on the Southland County Council, and also on his appointment of chairman of the council.
