FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. ' REPORTS OF COMMITTEES. t There were present at the fortnightly meeting of the Invercargill Borough Council last evening his Worship the Mayor (Mr J. D. Campbell) and Councillors W. Hinchey, J. Robertson, T. O’Byrne, J. G. Imlay, A. .1. Ball, F. G. Hall-Jones, C. J. Brodrick, H. Macalister, J. Gilkison, A. C. Ford, G. J. Reed and E. Sheehan. The application from the Rest Room Committee that the Plunket Society be allowed the use of the office for two hours a week was referred to the Works Committee. Reports of Committees. The reports of committees as adopted were:— Reserves Committee. Proposed Township Oreti Beach: Having set up a committee consisting of the chair, man, Councillor Ford, Mr A. Derbie, the Curator and a representative of the Oreti Beach Association to formulate a plan for the proposed layout of township at Oreti Beach and to report. Roads Seaward Bush Endowment: Recommend that the Southland County Council be recommended to ask the Government for a grant to clear and form the two undermentioned roads at Seaward Bush. Masons road from the end of the present formation to the Kennington-Waimatua road. The road adjoining the southern boundary of the Invercargill municipal endowment from Powell’s road on the east to the Kennington-Waimatua road on the west.

Works Committee. Second-Hand Dealers Licenses: Recom- - mend that applications from Holloway Bros., F. L. Coutts, D. R. Corson and W. N. Lynch for renewal of second-hand dealers licenses be granted. Dangerous Goods License: Having receiv- ‘ ed an application from Messrs Carswell and Company Ltd., for permission to store 2,000 gallons, - Class 1, dangerous goods on section 1, Market Reserve, Wood street, recommend that permission be granted. Kerbside Petrol Pump: Regarding the application from Messrs Wright Stephenson and Company, Ltd., for permission to erect two kerbside petrol pumps at the Wood street entrance to their property being section 6-7, block 76, Invercargill hundred. Having granted the application subject to the usual conditions. Building Permit: Having received application from the Presbyterian Social Service Association forp permission to erect a lean-to shed for temporary sleeping accommodation on its property in Grey street with an average stud of Bft. Recommend that permission be granted. Public Works Loan, 1929, Special Loan No. 3: Having received a report from the Town Clerk setting out the balances available in the Public Works Ix>an and Special Loan No. 3. Recommend that the engineer be instructed to expend the balances available as opportunity arises. Footpath Lindisfarne Road: Having received a report from the Town Engineer regarding proposed footpath formation in Lindisfarne road. Recommend that the amount of £192 6/11 available in the Public Works loan be expended in making the footpath on the east side of Lindisfarne road from East Road to Yarrow street ano that any balance be expended on the west side from Y’arrow street northwards. Improvement of the road between footpath and tram track Conon street from Biggar Street to Grace Street and Grace Street from Conon Street to Elies Road: Having no recommendation to make regarding this work as no funds are available at present. Gravel Supply: Recommend that tenders be called for th? supply of 5000 cubic yards of gravel for maintenance of streets and 5000 cubic yards for works to be carried out under the £74,000 and £60,000 streets loans. Road Metal: Having received an offer from the Bluff Borough Council to supply 5000 tons of crushed metal (five grades) at 10/- per ton on trucks Bluff, delivery tosie effected between 1/6/29 and 31/3/30. Recommend that the offer be accepted and that a contract be entered into accordingly. Traffic Signs: Recommend that notices be erected on the Tweed street, plots, similar to those in Tay street directing the traffic ,to keep to the left of the plots. Trading Committee. Price of Coke: Having under consideration the price of and contracts for the sale of coke. Gasworks Y’ard Drain: Having considered the matter of the relaying of the drain in the gasworks yard. Recommend that the town engineer be authorized to proceed with the work at an estimated cost of £l5O. Meter Repairer: Having received a report from the gas manager that the meter repairer had resigned his position. Recommend that applications be invited by advertisement in the northern newspapers for a meter repairer at a salary of £5 10/pcr week of 44 hours with the usual statutory and corporation hceidays and one week’s annual leave on full pay. Department of Scientific and Industrial Research: Having received a letter from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research advising that in response to the council’s application an officer from the Department would visit Invercargill at an early date to discuss the blending of coals, etc. Recommend that any expenses in connection with the visit be paid by the council. Workmen’s Concession Tickets: Having considered the proposal that a system of workmen’s concession tickets be introduced on the trams and having no recommendation to make. Finance Committee. Superannuation Fund Age Limit: Recommend that the age limit for employees joining the superannuation fund be fixed at 45 subject to the council reserving to itself the right to consider individual cases of employees over that age and to admit them to the fund at its discretion. Aparima Bridge: Having received a letter from the Southland League stating that representations would be made to the Government to have the cost of the new Aparima River bridge apportioned on the same basis as the main traffic bridge to be erected at Balclutha- The Government has agreed to pay half the cost of the bridge at Balclutha. Having requested the council’s representatives on the League "to support the request to the Government. Concreting at Pilot Station: Recommend that the harbour master be offered the necessary gravel and cement not to exceed £ll in cost for the concreting of the paths and yard at the Pilot Station house on condition that he carries out the work.
