BASKETBALL

SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT.' MAKAREWA’S DOUBLE SUCCESS. ■ ■ z The growing popularity of basketball as a winter sport for girls was demonstrated yesterday by the large number of spectators present at the Waihopai Sports Association grounds to witness the annual seven-a-side tournament in which 38 teams took part. Weather conditions were good for basketball, despite the fact that the recent rain had left pools of water on some of the courts. From the commencement the tournament proceeded without a hitch, games following each other in quick succession, so that excellent order was maintained throughout the day. The members of the executive responsible for the arrangements are to be heartily congratulated on the management of the day’s games. Matches in the senior A grade and in the intermediate grade were played at the Sports Association grounds in Duke street, while the senior B grade matches were played on the Waihopai school courts in Herbert street. Play was kept at a high standard during the day. The games were all keenly contested, many providing exciting finishes. The semi-finals and finals of the intermediate and senior grades were played at the Sports Association grounds. In both the senior and the intermediate grades Makarewa teams were victorious. In the intermediate semi-finals St. Catherine’s defeated Bluff by 8 points to 5. In the senior semi-finals Makarewa defeated Rata A by 9 to 4 after an extremely interesting game. Makarewa shoots were well on their game, M. Wright and N. Beer scoring some remarkable goals. The Rata teafti gave a good exhibition of passing, but the shoots found it difficult to get away from the opposing defences. The Rata defence players on many occasions kept the ball away from the Makarewa goal-throwers. Towards the end of the game the play of the Rata team improved considerably. Mrs Mclnnes refereed. INTERMEDIATE FINALS. MAKAREWA (9) v. ST. CATHERINE’S (2). This match was a good example of intermediate basketball. St. Catherine’s for two years winners of the intermediate trophy, played a fast game, but they made constant use of a very long throw, which was frequently intercepted by a Makarewa player. St. Catherine’s centres kept their goalthrowers well supplied with the ball, but the latter were too excited, and through not taking sufficient aim at goal, failed to make use of many of their opportunities of scoring. In the second half, the ball was more often at the Makarewa goal, with the result that the score steadily mounted in their favour. I. Glennie and D. Harris scored some good goals for Makarewa. E. Fox scored for St. Catherine’s. SENIOR FINALS. MAKAREWA (6) v. RATA “B” (4). In this game Makarewa retained the form displayed in their previous match with Rata “A”, and appeared to be suffering little from fatigue. Rata were also playing a good fast game and from the first to the final whistle the teams were very evenly matched, D. Dennis secured from the first throw up and passed to the Makarewa goal, where the ball went out of play. F. Kidston (Rata) securing from the throw-in, passed to G. Bamford, who passed to L. Hallamore, I. Foster, R. Murdoch and S. Murdoch who scored. From the centre throwup, the ball was sent by a series of quick passes to the Makarewa goal where N. Beer scored. Play for a time centred round the Rata goal, but Mrs Mortimer (Makarewa) secured and passed to the centre, where D. Dennis secured and passed to goal. N. Beer obtained and passed to M. Wright, who scored a good goal. Makarewa (2), Rata (1). R. Murdoch scored for Rata and N. Beer for Makarewa before the half-time whistle. Makarewa (3), Rata (2). From the first throw up in the second half, the ball went straight to the Makarewa goal where M. Wright scored. G. Kensington secured the ball at the centre and passed to L. Hallamore who passed to the goal third, where S. Murdoch scored. The ball remained for a time at the Makarewa goal, but G. Bamford (Rata) finally secured, and the ball was passed to the centre and the shooting third where S. Murdoch scored. N. Beer scored two more goals before the end of the game. Mr N. Hamilton refereed. The results of the matches are as fol-
