(United Press Assn. —By Telegraph—Copyright.) (Rec. 7.55 p.m.) Washington, June 2. The Department of Justice announces that 27,575 cases were instituted under the Volstead Act in the United States during the first half-year of 1928, of which 7,099, or more than a quarter of the total, occurred in New York State. At the same time 24 industrial business men and other leaders have issued a signed message to the public urging support of Mr Hoover’s law enforcement programme and approving of the President’s request that Prohibition be given a fair trial. A group, including Mr Henry Ford, Mr Thomas Edison, Mr Robert Dollar and Mr Alfred P. Sloan asked other leaders to join them in backing Mr Hoover, especially in regard to Prohibition enforcement.—Australian Press Association.
