WAT IS ROTARY?

To the Editor.

Sir, —What is the League of Nations and what is Rotary are two questions which, it seems to me, require some elucidation. We have had some discussion in your columns on the League of Nations which have been very interesting and enlightening. But what about Rotary? We have had a Rotary Club in our midst for some years but I venture to say that outside of the club and persons inside, there are few who could tell you what it all means. The cables from Dallas do not help much to an understanding of the matter. It appears that there are two schools of Rotary thought; one whose motto is “Service before Self,” and the other whose guiding principle is “He profits most who serves best.” It would be interesting to know from the president of the local club which of these is the slogan of his club. It seems to me that they are so different in their purport and their appeal that Rotary cannot very well adopt both. We are constant!)’ hearing about the ideals of Rotary, but it is difficult to see in what idealistic sense the maxim “He profits most who serves best” can be used. It is certainly a merchant business slogan. Is Rotary a business organization or what really is it?—l am, etc., CONSTANT READER.
