/ YESTERDAY’S GAMES. NORTHERN . TEAM VICTORIOUS. Three soccer games were played on the showgrounds yesterday when 1 conditions overhead were good but the ground was very slippery. A Roslyn—Wakari team met Central during the morning before a fair number of spectators- and although the visitors were much too good for the local men, the latter put. up a good fight and made the game very interesting. ’ The majority of the play was on the wings and Cathcart, the central captain, moved out to the right during the second spell. He had many more opportunities there but spoiled a number of them with off-side play. The Mataura—lnvercargill game, which was played during the afternoon, was not particularly interesting. . The teams were evenly matched and the result was a popular one. The friendly game between Corinthians and Wednesday players was full of interest and .provided a fair amount of good give and take play. ROSLYN-WAKARI 7 v. CENTRAL 1. The teams were: Central (Red and White) : Hunter; Luke, Bishop; Glass, P. Anderson, Cullen; Butler, L. Robinson. Cathcart, Keen, Walsh. Roslyn-Wakari (White): Reay; Harburn, McCallion; Marshall, Roberts, McCallion; Doig, Harburn, Allum, Smith, Condor. Whites attacked from the kick-off and gained two corners. Central broke away but Condor returned to be forced out by Luke. A free kick to Whites resulted in a corner kick from which Allum scored from close in. Roelyn-Wakari 1 Central 0 Condor went down the wing and centred but Luke saved by conceding a corner. Whites continued to attack. Anderson cleared well and Cathcart shot from the wing to miss narrowly. Doig made a good run but Bishop cleared. Doig returned but the ball went over for a goal kick. Whites again attacked and Harburn returned a punch from Hunter and found the net before Hunter could recover himself. Roslyn-Wakari2 Central 0 Whites continued to attack and a neat passing rush put them in good position but Luke saved. Condor centred but the ball went right across to Doig, who shot wide. Cullen passed to Walsh who made a good run and secured a corner but the ball came out to Condor. He made a good run in the open but put too much screw on his kick and the ball went past. Central attacked strongly but Whites cleared and Harburn, Allum and Smith made a combined attack only to be robbed by Anderson. Doig sent in a long high shot which beat Hunter. Roslyn-Wakari 3 Central 0 Condor made a bid for a shot but Cullen robbed him after a determined fight. Central attacked for a time but Whites broke away . and Harburn shot wide. Central attacked and Cathcart shot but Reay cleared and Roberts sent the ball to Doig, who gained a corner. A goal kick gave Harburn a shot and Hunter punched clear at the expense of a corner. Condor had a shot from well out but it went wide. Doig centred to Smith in good position but Luke kicked over. Cullen kicked up the field and Robinson headed past the half backs but McCallion cleared. Doig went down and shot and the ball ■ slipped from Hunter’s hands but Bishop cleared. Condor had an easy shot but Anderson headed clear and Central attacked strongly. McCallion cleared and the White forwards broke away for a clear run but Glass came in from the wing and saved with a corner. When the second spell commenced Ros-lyn-Wakari attacked and secured two corners in quick succession. A goal kick put Whites on the defensive. Cathcart had a good chance but Reay came out and cleared. Whites attacked and Harburn scored from a scramble at the goal mouth. Roslyn-Wakari 4 Central 0 Whites had several shots at goal in quick succession, but Robinson, who had changed places with Hunter, punched clear. Allum finally beat him with a lifting shot from close in. Roslyn-Wakari 5 Central 0 Central attacked and Butler had a good chance but slipped and fell. Allum broke away and passed to Smith who passed to Condor. Condor kicked too far and Robinson let it go over. Central made a good run from the goal kick but the White defence was too strong and play returned to mid-field. Doig broke clear and had a good shot but Robinson punched over for a corner. Butler had a clear run but kicked too far and the ball went over. Butler again secured and kicked from well out and Reay had to go down to save. Smith made a good break and shot from good position but Robinson was safe. Condor centred to Harburn who took a hurried shot and missed by a wide margin. Central attacked strongly and Reay was called upon to save on several occasions and was then hurt in the right hand. Whites attacked for a time but did not make any serious attempt to score. Red and Whites went down to the penalty area but Cathcart spoiled their chances with off-side play. Red and Whites returned and Cathcart heeleel in to Butler. Reay went down and Butler had a clear shot over him. Roslyn-Wakari .. ■ 5 Central 1 Central attacked again and secured three corners. Whites attacked but Glass cleared. Roberts shot and Anderson cleared for Allum to secure and score with a long low shot. Roslyn-Wakari 6 Central 1 Roslyn-Wawari returned from the kickoff and Allum went straight through to shoot into the corner of the net. Roslyn-Wakari 7 Central 1 Roslyn-Wakari took no further chances and the remainder of the game was mainly composed of line kicks from both sides. Mr. J. Galbraith was referee. INVERCARGILL 2 v. MATAURA 2. The teams were 1 Invercargill (Black): Gosling; Adamson Penman; Campbell (captain), Wilson, Smith; Mclntosh, D. Mclntosh, Ferguson, Haberfield. Mataura (Light Blue) : J. Milne; H. Brownsey, D. Todd; W. Ramsey, A. Todd (captain), R. English; Cullen, McKinnon, J. Hardie, A. Gourley. Blacks kicked off and Smith went up the wing but was forced out and Cullen went down but could not centre. English passed to Cullen, to McKinnon, who shot but Adamson cleared. Light Blues continued to attack and McKinnon had another shot. Blacks cleared and Haberfield made a good run but Brownsey cleared. Play went up and down for a time and then Cullen went through and scored an easy one in the corner. Mataura 1 Invercargill 0 Mataura attacked and Cullen received from a Black player in good position. He netted without difficulty. Mataura 2 Invercargill 0 McKinnon had a shot but Gosling cleared to Smith who went to the other end but English secured and passed to A. Todd. Tolld passed back and Mataura got a free kick for tripping. Mataura attacked for a short time at the commencement of the second spell but Blacks forced them back and after several minutes of persistent hammering D. Mclntosh netted from close in. Mataura t... .... .. 2 Invercargill 1 A period of even play followed and then Hardie shot but Gosling cleared. A. Todd

shot from well out and Gosling kicked over the line. D. Mclntosh went down and passed to Smith but the shot hit the side of the net. Campbell placed a lifting shot from well’ out but it went over. Play was very even for some time but finally Mclntosh centred to Wilson and he shot into the top of the net. Mataura - Invercargill 2 Blacks again attacked and Mclntosh shot and secured a corner. Browmsey cleared to half way but Adamson kicked back and gave Milne an anxious moment. Play moved up and down the field and was evenly contested for the remainder of the game. Mr. J. N. Gallan was referee. CORINTHIANS 5 v. WEDNESDAY PLAYERS 1. A friendly game was played between Corinthians and Wednesday players and several Rangers. The game was open and full of interest. Messrs. J. Galbraith and J. Morrison were the referees. WELLINGTON BEAT CANTERBURY. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 3. The Wellington and Canterbury Senior Association representatives Diet at Wellington to-day when a fairly evenly contested game ended in a win for Wellington by lour goals to three. Wellington started vigorously,, Rigby rushing the ball out of the goalie’s hands for the first goal and heading in a second! Frickleton opened the score for Canterbury, Lucas letting the ball slip from his hands and he added a second soon after. Barton increased the lead for Wellington, 3-2 being the half-time score. Campbell scored from a penalty for Wellington, Rigby being badly fouled by Walker. Play ranged up and down, both goals being severely pressed, but it was not until the closing stages that McLeod put on the goal for Canterbury, the final score being 4-3 in Wellington’s favour. In the fourth grade representative match Canterbury were outclassed by Wellington, who won by seven goals to nil, although the Canterbury goalie made good saves. Wellington’s attack was too strong. Sutherland secured most of the home goals.
