SPORTING

CANTERBURY NOTES. TRACKS IN RARE ORDER. ' CANDIDATES FOR WINGATUI. F. D. JONES FOR AUSTRALIA. RAPIER DOING WELL. So far this winter trainers, have not been able to complain that they cannot get tracks upon which to prepare their horses. The galloping grounds at Riccarton have never been in more perfect order, and the Metropolitan T.C. track at Addington could not be improved upon. As the weather appears to be set fine, the going should be splendid on Saturday and Monday. A fairly strong contingent of Riccarton and South Canterbury trained horses have departed for Wingatui. They should do better than hold their own for they are a fit lot. Among those horses which were accepted for at Dunedin, and arc not likely to race there arc Aberfcldy, Paper Boy, Amourette, and Arch Arrow. Lanier should race well in his hurdle engagement at Wingatui for he has been responsible for some very good work. He will be ridden by I. Tilson. In his schooling this gelding has performed really well. His jumping has been clean and fast, and he has got away from each fence, smartly; also the further he goes the better he shapes. One thing may prevent him from giving of his best while at Wingatui. A rather straight shouldered gelding, he may find the fences there a little too tall for him. They are certainly much more formidable than those he has schooled over. Nine of Spades is another juniper who can race over low set hurdles with the best, but he gets tied up when they are big. The class of fences he likes best arc such as are'to be found at Waimate and Timaru. Those in use at Wingatui and Riccarton don’t appeal to him at all. Great Star had done no fast work when he ran second to Bonrosc at Ashburton, and he has done very little since. At his best and on good firm ground he should be hard to beat. The race Haze had at Ashburton did him a lot of good; so much that he is likely to win a race before the Dunedin Winter Meeting is finished. Troilus’s mission to Wingatui is the big hurdle race on the second day. He will race on the flat the first day. This gelding is not a really good stayer, but he is so very well that he is bound to hang on much longer in the two-mile hurdle race than is generally thought. What beats him will win. Honeycomb has been galloping so well since he won at Amberley that he is looked upon by most people as something like a certainty for a race at Dunedin. Undoubtedly he is galloping well, and he will be unlucky if he does not get some money while down south. Unfortunately for his people this imported gelding does not always find his feet smartly. This causes him to get badly placed, and has lost him some races. If Prickles is ever going to win a race this season she should do so at Wingatui. She is thoroughly seasoned, has been working well, is a fairly good stayer, has no weight to carry, and she loves soft going. Arch Arrow was to have gone to Wingatui. He may go yet, but it is doubtful. He got pricked when at Blenheim, and the thing took so long to get well that he has done practically no work. Caterpillar has been galloping so very brilliantly that were she engaged in a Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton instead of a Tradesmen’s Handicap at Wingatui, she would be one of the heavily backed division. She does not stay well, but her wonderful burst of speed may tie up the opposition in the early stages. She and Great Star will have a great duel for leadership. / Sudden Storm’s knees have given a lot of trouble, all the season. Lately she has been hitting out more freely in her work. Should she do a good preliminary this mare might be worth supporting at Wingatui. She has not got as much speed as Great Star or Caterpillar, but she hangs on better than they do, and if she is still within striking distance of them when the straight entrance is negotiated she may gather them up in the run home. Wharncliffe has gone down to contest the big steeplechase. He did well while at Wanganui, and he has done well since he came home. This means that, he is a better horse than he was at Wanganui. He certainly is as far as health goes, but he is not a better jumper. At Wanganui the fences are small and light, yet he hit some of them very hard. At Wingatui the jumps are neither small nor light. He can’t hit them hard and survive the contact. If he jumps better than he did at Wanganui he will win, but it looks as if E. Shaw will have an uncomfortable ride rather than a pleasant on’e. Bulolo having only just arrived from the far north, is an unknown quantity here, but already he has shown on the tracks that he can gallop fast. ■ R. Ellis took him and Arrowmir south a couple of days ago. The race Malmsey had at Ashburton did her no harm. In fact it has done her good. She will be well supported here for her outings at Wingatui. This is one of the fortunate sort to which the going makes no difference. J. B. Pearson took Caterpillar, Malmsey and Kaikahu to Wingatui. The stable has been out of luck all the season, but such a useful trio should surely win some money before they return home. Kaikahu will not race until the second day, when he will make his debut as a steeplechaser. Tire course at Wingatui is a hard one for a maiden to tackle, but Kaikahu is a maiden who would carry the confidence of all who have seen him school, no matter what course in New Zealand the race was to be run over. Arrowmir has a nasty habit of stopping suddenly at the business end of his races. He blows a lot after galloping, and the cause of his stopping may be an excess of fat inside. If this is the cause then he should always race better as a meeting progresses.. Of course he may stop from some other cause. If so then he will not improve with racing. Magna Charta is engaged in the hurdle events at Wingatui. He is also in some flat races, and he will probably be reserved for them. He schools fairly well at home over low hurdles, but he does not go at them with much confidence. This being the case, he may not be raced over jumps until the South Canterbury meeting. Personally the writer does not expect Magna Charta to ever do much good on race tracks. He is a fine big gelding with bundles of pace all going to waste because he does not like racing. G. J. Pine was going to Dunedin, but at the last moment he decided to pull Paper Boy and Amourette out of their engagements. Aberfeldy is a very doubtful starter at Wingatui. He lightened up while away at Wanganui, and is only beginning to look right again. In consequence he has not done much work. It is on the cards that he will be shipped to Australia very soon. Charlatan is another jumper that will not go to Dunedin. Rapier is bowling along well in his work. He will be in forward condition when he departs for Sydney. He thrives best'when working. • F. D. Jones has booked accommodation for Limerick, Paquito and Arikiwai on the Ulimaroa on July 25. He is keeping these geldings busy. Two horses that have come into the market for their engagements at Ellerslie are Paddon and Seatown. Wiltshire is first choice here for the Great Northern Steeplechase. It does not seem a good selection. On good ground Wiltshirt »is a fine jumper, but when it is muddy he hooks his fences badly. A. E. Ellis has been engaged to ride Glendowie in the Great Northern Steeplechase. There is a rumour afloat that Glendowie will not Lit a starter.

Star Stranger 11. is still in a bad way owing to having crashed through the wing of a hurdle when being schooled. She may never race again. There is nothing seriously wrong with Evening. She was not taken to Dunedin because there is still some heat in the leg she hit, and her trainer would not risk racing her on it. Nightmarch is doing well. On looks he will be a better horse as a four-year-old than he was at three, which means that he may prove good indeed. It is almost a certainty that he will race in Australia next spring. COMMENT ON THE RACING. PERFECT WEATHER CONDITIONS. KILOFF SUSTAINS BROKEN NECK. (From Our Special Representative.) Dunedin, June 1. The Dunedin Jockey Club’s Winter meeting opened in perfect weather, the sun shining warmly from a cloudless sky and there was not. a breath of wind. The attendance was distinctly good and appeared to be above the average. Lancer was a pronounced first fancy for the June Hurdle Handicap, carrying 383 tickets more than Rangatahi, with Amorist 73 chances away in third place, about 140 followers ahead of Magna Charta. The pool amounted to £1,125 10/-, as compared with £1,314 last season. The big field appeared to somewhat puzzle backers. Racing to the first fence Antrim Boy was in charge from Magna Charta. At the stand Magna Charta had a slight advantage from Antrim Boy and Amorist, followed by Valves, with the others stringing out. Near the mile post Antrim Boy and Magna Charta were together, but the latter made a faulty jump and dropped back. Amorist moved up to Antrim' Boy and the pair cleared out to lead the field up the back, with Magna Charta.in third place, just in front, of Lancer. Amorist led round the far turn from Antrim Boy. When moving up at the second to last fence Lancer (A. J. Peart) came to grief and rolled. Running to the home turn Nine of Spades made a forward move. Crossing the final obstacle well clear, Amorist (G. Salt) ran home an easy winner by four lengths from Nine of Spades (I. Tilson), with Magna Charta (E. Shaw) over three lengths off third, three lengths in front of Brightling (I). McMullan), then came Antrim Boy (W. Cooper), Te Maui (J. Kerr) and Apache (G. Dempster) in order. The winner had a very easy task, but his way was cleared by Magna Charta putting in a bad leap at the mile and Lancer falling. Nine of Spades made up a lot of ground over the last half mile. Magna Charta made a very promising display after an early fault. Brightling was another starter who did well when he settled down and it was noted that he made up a big stretch of ground from the second to last row of battens. Te Maui and Apache encouraged their supporters to look for better things later when they become accustomed to hurdle racing conditions. Lancer appeared to be going strongly when he toppled over. The Australian-bred winner, Amorist, was originally, owned by J. McCombe, who gave him his early education as a fencer prior to passing into the care of the Riccarton veteran R. Longley, who has prepared many jumping horses in his time. For the Brighton' Handicap, Honeycomb (C. Emerson) was an easy first selection to carry nearly 1,000 tickets more than Salmo Salar, with Narrative 43 chances off in third place, 46 supporters in front of Great Star. Of the others On Watch, Paris, Membo and Karitane were the best backed. The pool reached £2,865 10/-, as against £2,230 10/- last season. Greencloth and Pukemaori delayed the start, the latter acting very badly. From a good start Great Star was first to show out from On Watch and Narrative, with Pukemaori moving up fast. Racing to the far turn Great Star was soon attended by Pukemaori, then in close company came Honeycomb, Little Queen, Town Major and Salmo Salar. The order was much the same to the home turn where Salmo Salar was moving up. At the distance Great Star was challenged by Narrative and then Salmo Salar. In a very exciting finish Great Star (R. Rickerby) won by half a head from Salmo Salar (L. J. Ellis), with Narrative (J. Andrews) a neck off third, while Membo (F. Voight) was a length and a half away fourth, attended by Town Major, Gay Fashion and Ripdale. In the draw for places Town Major was on the extreme outside of the field with Membo next. The three-year-old winner put up a great effort under 10.4 and it was only in the last stride that he came on again to head Salmo Salar, while Narrative ran a fine race. The favourite (Honeycomb) failed to see the distance out and was beaten at the home turn. Pukernaori did well for seven furlongs. There was very fair speculation on the Birthday Handicap and King Balboa (L. J. Ellis) was sent out first favourite carrying 62 tickets more than Money Mine, with Beau Geste 174 chances off in third place, 142 supporters ahead of Royal Saxon, while Prickles was close up next. The pool read at £3,252, as compared with £3,310 on the corresponding event of the previous season. From a good start Money Mine and Royal Saxon were first to break the line, but Circulation quickly ran to the front to show the way past the stand from Royal Saxon and Prickles. Turning into the back stretch Circulation had drawn six lengths clear from Royal Saxon and Prickles, then in order, came Beau Geste and Money Mine. There'was little change racing to the far turn, but moving up the hill the field was closing on Circulation and, to some extent, bunching. Circulation continued to hold command to the distance where she was challenged by Royal Saxon and then Money Mine put in a claim, while Town Bank was running on strongly. A little further on King Balboa looked to be getting into the firing line, but quickly retired. A rousing finish resulted in Money Mine (A. Eastwood) beating Royal Saxon (C. Emerson) by a short head, with Circulation (F. E. Ingram) a length and a half off third, while Town . Bank L. Woolford) was two lengths away fourth, then followed Prickles (C. Eastwood), Beau Geste (F. Voight) and King Balboa (L. J. Ellis) in straggling order. Money Mine stayed on well and fairly worried Royal Saxon out of the stake. The time was better than the average and was declared at 2mins 38 3-ssecs, as against the race record of 2mins 34 2-ssecs by Rorke’s Drift in 1921. Circulation failed over the last half furlong. Town Bank was late arriving on the scene, and ran a good race. King Balboa might have been closer up at the finish, but appeared to be eased when pursuit of the leaders was hopeless. Beau Geste ran fairly well. For the Otago Steeplechase, Wharncliffe was elected first in order of selection, carrying 520 tickets more than Fabriano, with Nylotis 50 chances off in third place, about 220 supporters in front of The Babe, who just headed Greenstone. The pool amounted to £2,104 10/-, as against £2,085 last year. Greenstone showed out early, but Terehu led over the stand double from Fabriano, Greenstone, Nylotis, Wharncliffe and The Babe in that order. All jumped the sodwall well. At the post and rails on the hillside Terehu was a dozen lengths in front of Fabriano, then came Greenstone and Wharncliffe. At the second fence of the far side double The Babe (A. J. Peart) fell. Terehu was still making the pace, well clear, at the far turn, but Fabriano was closing up and actually led across the water jump.

Passing the stand the second time Fabriano just led Terehu over the double, then came Greenstone, Nylotis and Wharncliffe at intervals. The leaders jumped the sod wall, but Wharncliffe struck heavily and bumped E. Shaw off. Racing down to the back double Terehu again got on terms with Fabriano, while Nylotis commenced to move up. Leading’ round the far turn from Terehu, Fabriano was first to clear the final obstacle from Terehu, then came Nylotis. As Fabriano (D. O’Connor) ran past the distance post the cheering for his owner-trainer P. T. Hogan broke out, and was continued for some time after the race. Fabriano won by twenty lengths from Nylotis (A. S. Ellis), who cut Terehu (D. Mullan) down in the run home and beat him for second money by six lengths, with Greenstone (G. Dempster) fifteen lengths off fourth. The time was 7mins 14 2-ssecs, as against the previous best of 7mins 15 2-ssecs by The Babe last season —the present distance was first raced over in 1926. P. T. Hogan purchased Fabriano from Mr J. M. Samson some time ago and practically renovated a broken-down performer. Terehu ran a very fine race and did not display signs of tiring until racing to the final fence. Nylotis was kept well back throughout, but had no chance with the winner. It was something new to see a descendant of Solferino win a cross-country event. Greenstone travelled well and the race will do him good.

Waving Corn was always first fancy for the Tradesmen’s Handicap to go out carrying 270 tickets more than Gay Sonnet, with Meadow Lark (W. Pascoe) 64 chances off as third selection, about 60 supporters ahead of Arrowmir (R. Stratton). The pool amounted to £3,172, as compared with £3,052 10/- last year. The field was in good line at the start, but Meadow Lark dwelt and lost four lengths and apparently his chance. Arrowmir was first to hit the front from Battle Flag and Coomassie. Before the far turn was reached Battle Flag had dropped back. Arrowmir led round the far turn, but Coomassie ranged up to him climbing the hill, with First Raid, Royal Tractor and Waving Corn closing up, while Gay Sonnet was coming from the rear and Sudden Storm also improved her position. Coomassie had Arrowmir beaten below the distance. Waving Corn ran to the head of affairs, with Gay Sonnet and Sudden Storm coming very fast on the outside. Going on, Waving Corn (A. Eastwood) lasted long enough to win by threequarters of a length from Gay Sonnet (C. Emerson), with Sudden Storm (C. Eastwood) a head off third, while Coomassie (C. Brodie) was close up fourth, then came Battle Flag (L. Woolford) and First Raid. Waving Corn landed the second leg of the double for C. Gieseler’s stable, but she had very little to spare, as Gay Sonnet and Sudden Storm both put in great runs in the home stretch. Coomassie worried Arrowmir out of his chance over the last two furlongs, but. failed for speed herself when the pinch came. However, the Southland mare ran a fine race.

The North Island gelding Handy was a firm favourite for the Hunters' Steeplechase to carry about 390 tickets more than Ngarata, with Message Boy 240 chances away in third place, about 80 friends ahead of Royal Land. The pool reached £1,829, as compared with £1,745 10/- last year. Royal Land led out from Handy. At the far side double Royal Land bumped his rider (E. Olsen) off at the second fence and Wairio (D. McMullan.) followed suit, then Pantier (W. Cooper) came down, and Message Boy jumped into one of the fallen competitors and lost his rider, but was remounted to go after the leaders —Handy and Ngarata—who were a long way away. As Handy came to the first fence of the stand double one of the riderless steeds, Pantier to be particular, ran across him and pulled him up. Handy pushed into the fence with his chest and practically walked over it as it came down, Ngarata meanwhile drawing away with a strong lead. Ngarata was well clear crossing the sod wall, but Handy joined him and showed the Winton horse the way across the back double. Easily holding his own, Handy (C. Stratton) led to the straight to win by 100 yards, with Message Boy (E. Shaw) getting up in the straight to beat Ngarata (J. Walker) for second money by six lengths. Only the three horses finished. The winner, who is a beautiful jumper, had a very simple task despite being hindered and held up as recorded. Ngarata ran a fair race and jumped well, but tired badly in the run home.

For the St. Ciair Handicap the large field of twenty-four faced the starter, with Lucky Light first favourite, carrying 586 tickets more than Red Sea, with Night Effort 250 chances off in third place, 13 supporters in front of Bulolo, but Impertinence, Sweet Refrain, Killorna, Dumblane, Filosol and several others were strongly followed. The pool was hoisted as £3,400 10/-, as against £2,636 last year. From an excellent start Waihenio was badly left, the first to show out being Bulolo, while Lucky Light was prominent. Nearing the far turn Haulage took command from Nanette and Lucky’ Light. There was little change to the home turn where Bulolo shot up, ivith Nanette, Red Sea, Killorna and Lucky Light handy. At the distance Bulolo (R. Beale) ran to the front and drew away to win by five lengths from Red Sea (L. J. Ellis), with Glenrowan (W. Cooper) a neck off third, a length in front of Nanette (A. Eastwood), then came Filosol (J. Andrews), Lucky Light (F. J. McKay) and Attractive Lady (B. Shand). When racing down the back Kiloff (N. J. Dwyer) fell and broke his neck. The jockey, who was unhurt, stated that the horse was running by himself when he came down and was not interfered with in any way, hence it was deemed unnecessary to, hold an inquiry. Bulolo, who was recently purchased by Mr J. A. Beale, of Christchurch, was raced in Auckland up till a few weeks ago. He is a speedy son of Bisogne. Red Sea ran a gallant race, but could not get near the winner from the distance. Lucky Light raced well and the outing may improve her slightly for future engagements. Nanette displayed speed and may be hard to beat before the meeting closes.

For the final event, the Winter Handicap, the Riccarton-trained Malmsey was always first fancy, but a large amount of support came for Latin Quarter. At the close of operations he was only 430 tickets off in second place, with Red Racer (J. Smith) 420 chances away as third fancy, while Fairy Herald was 20 supporters off as fourth selection, but Wayward and Ronaki were also keenly followed. The pool amounted to £3,906 10/-, compared with £4,056 10/- last season. Martis began best from a good start, but at the six furlong post Miss Mercia was in charge from Latin Quarter and Ronaki. The order was the same at the far turn, but Latin Quarter showed slightly in front topping the rise to show the way into the straight from Miss Mercia and Fairy Herald. In the run home Latin Quarter (F. J. McKay) easily held his own to win by three lengths from Malmsey (C. Eastwood), who put in a good run, with Fairy Herald (J. Dooley) close up third, attended by Martis (B. Brodie). Then came Miss Mercia, Carnot and Red Racer. Before the home turn was reached Red Racer was beaten. Carnot was running on fairly well, at the finish. Malmsey had no chance with the winner, who scored like a good horse. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY. (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, June 2. (Special to the Times.) Auckland, June 1. Delightful weather greeted the opening of the Great Northern meeting, there being a very large attendance with the going a bit soft. The totalisator handled £69,103 against £74,461 10/- on the first day last year, a decrease of £5,358 10/-. Backers received a setback in the very first event, the First Division of the Jervois Handicap for which Kawainga and Archieleen were heavily supported, the eventual winner, Taneriri, being seventh choice at double figures. Catonian was left at the post and Archieleen tailed off badly in the second furlong, getting knocked back. Roman Pearl was just leading Kawainga, Justify, Brilliant Light, Arikttoa, Taneriri, Always, Brampton and Flitter past the five furlongs and crossing the top Taneriri made a fast run round, hitting the straight in advance of Roman Pearl, Justify, Kawainga, Maori Boy, Arikitoa and went on to win by a length and a-half from Arikitoa with Roman Pearl two and a-half lengths back. Maori Boy was a good fourth and Justify, Brilliant Light, Kawainga (who appeared to need the race) Always, Flitter, Mon Star, Just Nell, Archieleen, and Brampton followed in that order. Kauri Park, fourth favourite in a fine betting race on the Greenlane Steeplechase, won after a stern tussle with King’s Guard, both making their first appearance over the bigger fences. Maidos led for nearly a mile when he tipped out and Potoanui also fell. Then Uralla took charge but a faulty jump enabled Vexatious to take charge. At the second fence on the hill the second time King’s Guard outjumped her and led to the last fence, Kauri Park being with the leader here. The latter won by a neck with Vexatious eight lengths back third. Airtight was a good fourth and also well up were King Fame, Uralla, Master Arch and Town Rambler. Standfast at last came to light when he won the Second Division of the Jervois Handicap. He was handy to Atapai, Otranto and Welkne at the home turn with Indolent, Storm Fiend and Te Money also handy. The last named and Standfast had a short tussle in the straight before the latter forged ahead to win by three parts of a length with Indolent two and a-half lengths back, the next being Palmares (who was very slow at the start) Welkne, Catonian, Arihana, Mountain Guide, Storm Fiend and Camp Prince. The Penrose Hurdles was a chapter of accidents, seven out of the thirteen horses failing to complete the course. Prince Lu who was well backed, went to the front at the first fence and was never troubled, winning comfortably by a length from Lady Spalpeen who, too, went a good race. Horomea gave a fine display for his first attempt at Ellerslie and was seven lengths away third. Harbour View was fourth and Abbot’s Delight and Frothblower were the only others to finish. Overhaul came a nasty buster at the third fence giving A. Hobson a bad fall. Others to fall were Sulla, Sleepy Sol and Te Waka and Star Comet and Golden Wedding lost their riders. Mister Gamp, ridden a great race by A. E. Ellis, won the Great Northern Hurdles in easy fashion and is apparently going to take a lot of beating in other big jumping events later on. He was not so well backed as Red Fuchsia, who surprised by falling at the third fence. Beau Cavalier made the pace very warm and at the end of a mile and a-quarter where Wiltshire lost his rider, was ahead of Roni an Abbev, Mangani, Clockwork, Comical, Cybele and Mister Gamp. At the next fence, Comical and Clockwork both fell heavily. Along the back. Beau Cavalier retired, Roman Abbey having charge from Mangani, Beau Cavalier, Kawini, Cybele, Mister Gamp and Maunga. Five furlongs from home the second favourite made a move and he hit the front at the half-mile, leading over the second to last fence. He was eight ’lengths clear turning for home and although Roman Abbey got to within ■ a length of him, it was only on sufferance. Seven lengths away were Kawini and Manganui together and Maunga was four lengths further back fifth. Others to finish were Beau Cavalier and Karamu. Bisox, The Lover and Seatown were squeezed out at the start of the Cornwall Handicap, King Emerald leading out of the straight from Paddon, Seat own (who made up ground' fast), Eager Rose, High Pitch, Corinax, Queen Arch, Hyde Park and down the back King Emerald was clear from Paddon, Corinax, Seatown, Queen Arch, Mosque, Royal Doulton, Hyde Park, High Pitch and Eager Rose with The Lover and Bisox together last. Mosque took charge at the half-mile and came into the home stretch in front of King Emerald, Queen Arch, Seatown, High Pitch and Hyde Park. Once in line, Seatown hit the front only to be at once tackled by Paddon. The latter got his head in front but Seatown came again and won by a neck in a good finish. Hyde Park was two lengths away just in front of High Pitch, the next in order being Mosque, King Emerald, Corinax, The Lover, Bisox, Queen Arch and Thursby. Odin was a hot favourite for the Hunt Club Hurdles and won easily. Taumai led most of the way but Odin ran to the front at the half-mile and although Taumai ranged alongside at the home turn the favourite held his own easily to win by a neck although his rider might have been caught taking it too easily. .Terrapeen was ten lengths back and Martis and Pikimai next. Soami fell on the flat and Master Clements at the end of a round. All of the 27 acceptors lined up for the Members Handicap in which most of the likely candidates were badly drawn, Black Duke drawing the extreme outside, and just inside him were L’Orient, Keddar, Vallar and Billikins, although Black Duke actually started from about eighth position. Gold Money was a firm favourite and she won like a racehorse. Dave, Merry Mint, and Gold Money led out and at the end of a furlong Billikins had run to the front from Marble King, Gold Money and Takutuma. Into the straight Billikins was just in front of the favourite followed by Awarere, Marble King, Cool Mint, Vallar and Kingfield. In the run to the judge, Gold Money held her own to score convincingly by a length and a-half from the outsider Billikins, who was a neck in front of Black Duke and Awarere who dead-heated for third. The next were Marble King, Takuitama, New Moon and Vallar.

Four thousand watched Compston and Hagen play a 36-hole return match at Moor Park, where last year Compston beat the American by a record margin of 18 up and 17 to play. To-day Hagen never reached championship form and seemed to plaj’ nonchalantly as though it was a mere exhibition game. Compston took the lead at the beginning and he kept it. He led two up at the end of the first half, the scores being: Compston 71; Hagen 73. Ultimate victory was Compston’s when he was eight up with seven to play. The defeat of Hagen is attributable to his inaccurate approaching and putting. Compston was steady throughout. —Australian Press Association.
