PRESIDENT'S CUP. FIRST GAMES PLAYED. The first games for the President’s Cup were played on Saturday when Corinthians defeated Rangers and Invercargill defeated Central. The games were not very good, although occasional bursts of bright footwork were seen. The game between Corinthians and Rangers was open and free from penalties and was played throughout in excellent sporting spirit. CORINTHIANS (7) v. RANGERS (1). The teams were: Corinthians (Light Blue) —Price, Cathcart, McMurdo, Morrison, McKay, McMurdo, Rudolph, Archbold, Devon, Wright, Saunders. Rangers (Black and White) —Greenfield, Williamson, A. Robinson, Rigby, Batchelor, Glass, Holden, L. Robinson, Kirkham, Ferguson, Stirling. Corinthians kicked off against the sun and the ball went to Holden, who centred for McMurdo to clear. Corinthians attacked and Saunders centred to Archbold who netted by heeling from close in. Corinthians, 1; Rangers, 0. Devon took a long wide shot and some interesting open play followed. Kirkham made a goorl run with only Price to pass but McMurdo charged him from the side and a corner followed. McMurdo made a good run and passed to Devon, but Williamson sent his forwards away with a well-placed kick. Play hung in Rangers’ half with occasional breaks on the part of the Black and Whites. Play was open with good passing. Archbold finally outwitted Robinson and scored near the post. Corinthians, 2; Rangers, 0. Rangers attacked for a time and gained a corner, but McKay kicked clear. Stirling had a shot, but McMurdo cleared and play went up and down. Devon beat Greenfield with a low shot. Corinthians, 3; Rangers, 0. Holden made off down the line, but the ball went over. McKay sent the ball up and Rudolph shot across for Wright to head into the net. Corinthians, 4; Rangers, 0. Rangers attacked and Holden kicked over, and Batchelor also went over the goal-line. McMurdo passed to Archbold, to Rudolph, who shot across, but Wright was too far over and a goal kick resulted. Saunders made a good attempt, the ball going just over the bar. Rudolph passed to Wright in good position, but the ball struck the bar and Greenfield cleared. Half-time came a few seconds later. Rangers attacked, but Cathcart kicked out and Corinthians went down for Wright to score. Corinthians, 5; Rangers, 0. Rangers attacked, Holden passing to Ferguson who had a clear run, but Price went down and sent the ball around the post. Rangers continued to attack, but the Light Blue defence was too strong and Black and Whites were finally put on the defensive. Wright finally netted from a scramble close in. Corinthians, 6; Rangers, 0. McKay shot from well out and struck the bar and followed it up with another shot which went over. Morrison was feeding his forwards well and McMurdo was also doing a lot of spoiling. Saunders shot from the wing and the ball went over. Saunders centred and Archbold charged it, but a goal kick resulted. Rangers made a sudden break and Rigby shot for the ball to go off Cathcart into the corner of the net.

Corinthians, 6; Rangers, 1. Morrison shot over the bar from a corner kick and several corners followed. Rangers attacked for a time, but Light' Blues returned and shot over the line several times. Rangers broke away and Holden shot over the bar. Light Blues returned to the attack and Wright netted a low ball. Corinthians, 7; Rangers, 1. Rangers attacked strongly, but were forced back and time was called. Mr J. Morrison was referee. INVERCARGILL (5) v. CENTRAL (3). Invercargill (Black)—Gosling, W. Anderson, Wilson, Penman, Campbell, Milne, Alderson, Blake, Beale, Haberfield. Central (Red and White)—R. Hunter, Lake, Bishop, Glass, P. Anderson, Cullen, Butler, W. Anderson, Cathcart, Kean Walsh. Play was spirited from the commencement of the game and Invercargill began attacking, Hunter being called upon to clear on three occasions. Play surged upand down for a time and then Blacks commenced hammering at the Reds’ defence. Beale succeeded in shooting past Hunter from close in. Invercargill, 1; Central, 0. Long kicking sent the ball up and down the field for a time, but gave neither side an advantage. Alderson made a good run and, punting through, followed up and scored with a good shot. Invercargill, 2; Central, 0. Invercargill began to combine better and moved down the field through the Red defence. Milne passed in to Alderson who went through to score with a rising ball. Invercargill, 3; Central, 0. Central began to combine better and the forward line showed more dash. Good passing carried them through the Black defence and Cathcart scored with a good shot. Invercargill, 3; Central, 1. Half time came a few minutes later. Invercargill made a vigorous attack when

play was resumed and Blake twice shot for goal, but Hunter was safe. Central made a good passing m'ovement and the ball went to P. Anderson in front of the net. He scored without difficulty. Invercargill, 3; Central, 2. Central continued to play vigorously and Catheart made a good run down the centre of the field and scored. Invercargill, 3; Central, 3. Invercargill then retaliated and, from a determined struggle in the penalty area, Beale scored with a shot to the corner of the net. Invercargill, 4; Central, 3. A miss-kick let Wilson get a good low shot which beat the Red and White goalie and finished the scoring for the day. Invercargill, 5; Central, 3. The final stages were interesting, both teams keeping the ball well under control. Mr J. Galbraith was referee. SCHOOL GAMES. Two games were set down for Saturday, but only one eventuated, that between Middle and Waihopai. Waihopai fielded seven players and were defeated by eight goals to nil. Mr W. Anderson was referee. The game between South and North fell through on account of North failing to raise a team. A friendly game was played under the control of Mr F. Williamson.
