LUMSDEN NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) A meeting of the Northern District Rugby Sub-Union was held on Thursday when the president, Mr C. Belsham, presided over the. following delegates: Messrs T. Small, Lumsden, J. Smith, J. Kelly, Riversdale,-J. McMath, M. Rasmussen, BaltoUr, W. Collins, A. Cameron, Waikaia, G. Sprout, Schools. The Southland Union advised that a challenge for the Sports Cup had been received from Western, the challenge being third in order of priority—Received. Correspondence was received from the S.R.F.U. inviting the sub-union to nominate players available for the trial match on June 3 at Wellington. Only players available for the Australian tour were to be nominated.—The matter was referred to the selectors. The Southland Union also advised that the usual fixtures on Country Day would be held and wished to know if the Northern District intended sending a team. —It was decided to send a teain on June 3, the president to make arrangements for conveying the players. The secretary, Country Pirates Club, wrote requesting the match Pirates v. Waikaia on the 18th be postponed on account of May Fair week and the school holidays depriving the club of some of the senior players.—The secretary was instructed to advise the Country Pirates Club that the sub-union regretted being unable to postpone the match as other clubs in the district would.be similarly affected. A letter was received from Mr W. Collins stating that he had ordered off A. Lee and J. Farrell in the Waikaia-Balfour match on Saturday, the 4th inst.—After a full discussion and report from the referee it: was decided to place the players mentioned on the caution list. ’ ■ - ' The Northern District Ladies’ Hockey Association advised that the date of the football tournament at Waikaia fell on the same date as the hockey tourney at Riversdale and asked-if some arrangement could be made to avoid clashing. The date had been fixed for the 25th. The Waikaia delegates stated that all arrangements had been finalized and could not at this stage be altered.—lt was decided to advise the Ladies’ Hockey Association accordingly, regretting the sub-union’s inability to postpone the tournament.

The following transfers were granted: C. Tull from Roxburgh to Waikaia; D. Manson from Star to Riversdale! C. Lenon from Orepuki to Balfour; N. McDonald from Wyndham to Country Pirates; W. Hazlett from Pirates to Lumsden. The weather was fine at Lumsden on Saturdaj’ when the football match, Lumsden v. Waikaia, was played. The meeting of these teams always creates' considerable interest in the Northern District and Saturday was no exception, there being a large attendance of spectators from all parts of the district. The display, from a spectator’s viewpoint, was disappointing, the game being one-sided as the score indicates, 33 to nil in favour of Lumsden. At no stage of the game did the visitors look like winning and they were kept defending until the final whistle blew'. The shield-holders fielded their strongest available team, the forwards being considerably strengthened, by the inclusion of W. Hazlett and G. Tomlin. The Waikaia team was not at full strength, four of the usual team being unavailable. The display of the Lumsden backs was of a high standard and passing rushes were the order of the day. The forwards played a greatly improved game, resulting .in the backs getting the ball from most, of the set scrums and line-outs.

The home side attacked from the kick off and shortly after the commencement of play a penalty was awarded, which D. Ogilvy converted with a fine kick. From a line-out in Waikaia’s twenty-five Maurice Reidy received and passed to U. Crosbie, who cut in and passed to Wellman, the last-named allowing D. Ogilvy to score at the corner. No goal resulted. Shortly after good passing between Johnson, U. Crosbie, Alex. Reidy and D. Ogilvy resulted in the wing-threequarter being pushed out at the corner. From a ruck near the line V. Richards received and dived over to score well out. G. Tomlin goaled. At halftime the score was: Lumsden 11; Waikaia nil. In the second spell the scoring account was opened by Mcßride. Hazlett received at about the centre of the field and punted across to Mcßride, who gathered the ball in his stride and scored at the corner. Tomlin failed with the kick. Waikaia attacked from the kick off and good work by M. Cruickshanks, Tull and Stevenson took play to Lumsden’s twenty-five. From some loose play Mcßride secured and, beating the opposing wing, streaked down the length of the field for the line and scored behind the posts. Richard converted. Lumsden again attacked and a forward rush, in which Ogilvy, Senior, Small and Reidy were prominent, took play to the visitors’ line. Johnson received from the ruck and threw a long pa.'K to Alex. Reidy, who in-passed to Crosbie, who scored in a handy position. The next try came as a result of a passing bout between Johnson, Wellman, U. Crosbie and A. Reidy, U. Crosbie coming round to receive the final pass and score well out. The forwards kept hammering away and a rlribbling rush, in which Ibbotson, J. Ogilvy and G. Tomlin were prominent, resulted in J. Ogilvy scoring. No goal resulted. The final try was scored by Alex. Reidy as a result of a passing rush, in which all the backs handled. No goal resulted, and the whistle sounded shortly after with the score: Lumsden 33; Waikaia nil.

The inclusion of Hazlett in the team made a vast difference to the,Lumsden pack in the tight play, but in the loose the player showed signs of not being thoroughly fit. After a few games, however, he should be in good form for Country Day. The hardest worker in the forwards was Tomlin, whose following up greatly assisted his side. M. Reidy gave a good display as wing-forward, while the remaining forwards showed greatly improved form. The backs played well, and it would be difficult to single out, any player for special mention. They made the most of the opportunities which were offered. The Waikaia backs were disorganized, the half-back, Deans, receiving a rough handling. A. Lee and E. Hamer played as five-eighths, with T.< Moffitt, the ex-Eastern player, as centre. 8. Lee, as wing-threequarter, gave a good display, while E. Matheson at full-back had plenty of saving work to do and he acquitted himself well. In the forwards Cruickshanks, Stevenson and Matheson were outstanding, while Tull played a useful game at wing-forward. The result of the match puts Lumsden in the lead for the Northern District competition. Hockey. On Saturday the ladies’ hockey team travelled to Wendon, where the home side won by five goals to four. For Lumsden goals were secured by Misses Myra Belsham (2), Winnie Belsham (1) and Maggie Sherriff (1).
