MATAURA NOTES
ORCHESTRAL CONCERT. (From Our Correspondent.) Although only comparatively a-short time in#existence the Mataura Orchestral Society under the leadership of Mr O. E. Hubener has made rapid progress by consistent practice. The second concert of the season was given to a large and appreciative audience in the Horticultural Hall on Friday.
The orchestra appeared on five occasions, its numbers being well selected and equally well received, while suporting artists favourably known in the district assisted with a delightful programme. The orchestra’s first item was the overture “The Crusader” (Rollinson), and it was evident from the opening that Mr Hubener has a thorough command over his company and the subsequent numbers were equally well given and received by the audience which was loud in its praise of the orck-stra’s performance. The other contributions by the orchestra were: Selections, “Entracte Valse” (Hellmesberger),
I “Abila” (Gruenwald); overture, “The Four : Ages of Man” (Lachner); and selection, “The Parade of the Dolls” (Gruenwald). The supporting artists were Miss Pryde and Mr Davies, of Invercargill. Miss Pryde’s first number was “Birds at Eventide” which earned for the singer an encore when she gave “Since My Love Now Loves Me Not.” In the second half Miss Pryde gave a charming interpretation of “Lie There My Lute” which pleased her auditors who demanded a recall, when she gave with equal success “In the Glorious Month of May.” Mr Davies created a favourable impression with his opening number “A Dream,” and he had to
submit to an encore. In the second half Mr Davies sang very pleasingly ‘Questa Quella,” for which he had to respond to a double encore with “Friend" and “When Song is Sweet.” Miss M. Burns and E. Duncan were the accompanistes. Returned Soldiers Association. The executive committee of the Mataura Returned Soldiers’ Sub-association held a meeting on Friday, the president (Mr R. Hutton) presiding over a satisfactory attendance. It was resolved that the surplus from the Anzac service collection amounting to £4 15/10 be forwarded to -the Gore Hos-
pital for returned soldier patients’ comfort fund. The secretary was instructed to forward a letter thanking the Girl Guides for their assistance with the sale of poppies and at the Anzac service, and also to Miss Sleeman for making a wreath. Arrangements were made for the holding of the annual reunion on Saturday, June 22.
