ATTACK ON CANTON

BRITISH MARINES RAND. RAIL COMMUNICATION BROKEN. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Hong Kong, May 11. It is reported that Shamecn Bund at Canton is closed. British marines landed as a precautionary measure. Foreign consuls and naval commanders met Canton officials and asked that the rebellious warships should not take action against Canton while anchored off Shameen. Admiral Shu refused to give assurances whereupon he was detained on an American gunboat. He later offered to hand over the fleet to Canton on the payment of 3,000,000 dollars. This was refused, although white flags were hoisted later following aeroplanes’ demonstrations by Canton. Cantonese blew up an important railway bridge on the Kowloon-Canton railway. Meantime, communication between Hong Kong and Canton by rail will be impossible for many months.—Australian Press Association.
