Commonwealth Loan. (Rec. 12.5 am.) London, May 9. The Commonwealth Loan of £12,403,734 has been underwritten converting Queensland 51 per cent maturing on July 1 into Commonwealth 5 per cent at 97 maturing in 1945-75.—Australian Press Association. Fatality on Steamer. (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) Shanghai, May 9. Mr E. Kakle, a New Zealander, and an engineer on the Carnarvonshire, was inspecting the boilers during the morning when a stop valve blew out filling the engine room with steam, which was not cleared for an hour. Kakle’s body was found on the top of a boiler. It is believed that death was instantaneous.—United Service. Eclipse of the Sun. (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) Singapore, May 9. For an hour before the eclipse of the sun it was constantly concealed by the clouds, threatening failure, but just prior to the eclipse the sun pierced the clouds and almost perfect results were obtained. Except for a slight haze the corona was beautifully displayed.—United Service. New Altitude Record. (Rec. 10.45 p.m.) Washington, May 8. Lieutenant Apollo Saucek, a naval aviator, ascended nearly eight miles to-day and made a new world’s altitude record. He used an oxygen mask and super charger after touching 20.000 feet. His instruments showed that he rose more than 40,000 feet. —United Service.
