RUFFIANS FALL OUT
BATTLE IN DARLINGHURST.
ONE WOUNDED IN LEG.
Sydney, May 8. Scenes reminiscent of Chicago occurred at Darlinghurst last night, when a battle occurred between reputable residents of that quarter and a gang of ruffians. The trouble started when a quarrel occurred between two men over a girl. One man had the backing of a gang of underworld celebrities. When the fight commenced guests from a nearby flat went to the assistance of the other man. The affair ended only when one ruffian was shot in the leg. Two of the guests were admitted to hospital with extensive cuts, a knuckle duster having been used. Later Philip Jeffs was charged with having assaulted Johns, and a man named Sorley was charged with having shot at Archer with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm. —Australian Press Association. JEFFS MORTALLY WOUNDED. INFORMATION REFUSED. (Rec.. 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, May 8. Phillip Jeffs, aged 32, who a few hours earlier was released on bail in connection with the Darlinghurst brawl, in which another man was shot, was found this morning huddled on the footpath near his home shot in the chest and stomach. He was sent to hospital in a precarious condition. He was conscious when picked up, but refused to give any information regarding the shooting.—Australian Press Association.
