“Expositions” on Dress
«««*.«» . , . tI'xAXMAWJIU a.WjeXBXAXtXt*XAS.XS.3J,X«.A*-*.tJL3 (From Our Correspondent). London. The latest thing in Lonodon is to have lectures, or, as they are called, “exposii lions,” on dress, telling the smart how to ; be smarter and the dowdy to be less dowdy. The firm of Harrod’s have just had a series of a week’s lectures by Madame d’Alroy, a lady who is, as far as lecturing goes, at the top of her profession, and who positively swooned with elegance. She, was really wonderful, and, supported by a corps of lovely mannequins, she announced the changes in style, and illustrated them from the vast storehouse of fashions in Harrod’s departments. Fashion is, she said, transient, and the secrets of style have to be learnt but once arid after that one can face each new season with the conviction that it is but another chapter in a book of which she knows the plot. There are new lines, new colours', new styles for 1929. For the afternoon, as
well as for the evening, the back of our dresses is to droop Ike the folded tail of the peacock. Once again the knees of the smart women are to remain covered. It does not matter if they arc dimpled like those of a baby or curled like a lumpy cauliflower, they will once again be her own secret and that of her masseuse.
All skirts are to be longer this season, whether they be for afternoon, evening or early morning sports wear. For afternoon they will be much longer than they have been, and for evening they will occasionally touch the ground, but it will be in uneven-
ness. One of the loveliest evening dresses that have been shown at any parade had a skirt of billowing beige tulle that came drifting down at one side only, and so well were its draperies managed that they' did not look odd, and they made quite the loveliest line when the wearer was sitting.
