POLICE AND CIVIL BUSINESS. The monthly sitting of fhe Magistrate’s Court took place at Bluff yesterday morning before Mr W. 11. Woodward, >S.M., when several police cases and a large amount of civil business were disposed of. William Meadow appeared on three informations of neglecting to send his child, aged twelve years, to school. He pleaded not guilty, but later amended the plea to guilty. Meadow stated that he was given to understand that his child had been expelled through failure to attend regularly. He was convicted and fined 6/-, with costs 45/- on the first count, the remaining two charges being dismissed. William Alexander Phillips, appearing for failure to maintain his wife, Elizabeth Phillips, of Stewart Island, was convicted and sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, warrant not to be issued if he paid the sum of £6 per calendar month, the arrears being cancelled. John Harrison (Mr Gordon Reed) pleaded not guilty to a charge of exceeding the speed limit within the borough on December 1. Constable Skipworth said that on the day in question defendant had passed an intersection at the post office at a speed estimated at from 30 to 35 miles per hour when a train was due to arrive and people were crossing the street. To Mr Reed, he said he did not have his watch out. Sergeant Tonkinson gave corroborative evidence. Harrison contended that he slowed down at the corner to see if any passengers were waiting for him. He was in low gear when he passed the intersection. Mary Josephine Campbell corroborated his evidence.
