CANNING INDUSTRY

BR ITAIN’S OPEN IN G

BEST TIN AND FINEST FRUIT

IMPORTS FROM AUSTRALIA

(United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) (Rec. 9.45 p.m.) London, April 23.

The Daily Express gives prominence to the fact that Australia in 1928 imported 20,000,000 cans of Californian fruit. Meanwhile, Australian fruit-growers were exporting to Britain" with the help of the British Government, though they were unable to supply their own market; yet Britain has the essentials of a great canning industry in the best tin and some of the finest fruits in the world. These have never been brought effectively together. It is both irritating and grimly humorous that British tin should travel 6,000 miles to be filled with fruit of the Antipodes and Pacific Coast, then sold in competition with our domestic growers.—Australian Press Association.
