BASKETBALL

SATURDAY’S MATCHES. Matches in the Saturday competition were played at the Waihopai Sports’ Association grounds under good weather conditions. Play in the senior grades was uninteresting, the intermediate matches providing more excitement. One senior match, Bluff v. St. Peter’s, was played at Bluff. The Rata senior team had a bye.

MAKAREWA (26) v. COLLEGIATE (9). Makarewa team: N. Beer, M. Wright, W. Bejl (shoots); R. Waldron, D. Dennis, C. Glennie (centres) ; M. Bissett, L. Waldron, Mrs Mortimer (defences).

Collegiate team: E. Botherway, K. Shaw, R. McGill (shoots); L. Strathern, E. Small, P. Youngson (centres) ; E. Hughes, M. Donaldson, R. Henry (defences). Both teams took the field with only eight players, but at half time, D. Dennis took ner usual place as jumping centre in the Makarewa team and L. Strathern played for the Collegiate team. This resulted in a decided improvement in play in the second half.

From the first throw, Makarewa centres secured the ball and passed to the shooting third where a goal was scored.. Play was then transferred to the Collegiate goal but the Makarewa defences intercepted and there was no score. N. Beer and M. Wright both scored for Makarewa within the next few minutes. From the centre, the ball was passed to the Collegiate goal, where it went out of play. Mrs Mortimer (Makarewa) secured from the throw in, and passed to C. Glennie who passed to R. Waldron, W. Bell and M. Wright, who again scored. K. Shaw scored the first goal for Collegiate, R. McGill (Collegiate) scoring, soon afterwards. R. McGill again scored for Collegiate making the score 4—3 in favour of Makarewa. From the centre the ball again passed by means of It. Small and P. Youngson to the Collegiate goal third. E. Botherway's attempt at goal was unsuccessful and Mrs Mortimer secured the ball passing to M. Bissett; who passed to the centre, third. C. Glennie obtained the ball and passed to the goal third where W. Bell scored. K. Shaw scored a good goal for Collegiate. Five more goals were added to Makarewa's score, and one more to the Collegiate score before half time, Makarewa (10), Collegiate (51. Play in the second half was brighter, although the Makarewa defences prevented the Collegiate goal throwers from making a great difference to their score. Makarewa shoots, on the other hand, were making use of every opportunity of scoring, despite the active work of the Collegiate defence players. M. Wright scored for M’tkarewa after which R. Met'ill scored for Collegiate. W - . Bell then scored two goals for Makarewa and K. Shaw one goal for Collegiate. For some time there was no further scoring, the bail travelling by a series of quick passing movements from goal to goal. Finally M. Wright from a good pass from N. Beer scored. From E. Botherway. K. Shaw obtained the ball anti scored. W. Bell scored again for Makarewa. I'iay remained for a time in the Collegiate goal third, but the Makarewa defence players were combining well and no difference was made to the Collegiate score. Eight more points were added to the Makarewa score before E. Botherway secured the ball from a swift pass from R. McGill and scored. _ Two more goals were added to Makarewa’s score before the end of the match. Mr Kinross controlled the game. ST. MARY’S (22) v. PIRATES (Si.

St. Mary’s team: D. Stone, J. Cahill, M. Shepherd (shoots); D. Deegan, M. Fitzgerald, M. Cooper (centres) ; M. Cook, M. Cook, K. Maloney (defences). Pirates team: F. Todd, F. Murdoch, D. Henderson (shoots); K, Hazlett, M. Humphrey, M. Milne (centres) ; R. Beal, A. jack, M. Woodward (defences). St. Mary’s, who are playing a much improved game, deserved their victory- against Pirates. J. Cahill obtained the ball from the first throw and scored. Play returned to St. Mary's goal where M. Shepherd obtained the ball from a pass from J. Cahill and scored. This was followed by another score for St. Mary’s by M. Shepherd. From the next throw. Pirates’ centres obtained the ball and passed to their goal third, where F, Murdoch secured and scored. For the next few minutes, St. Mary's had very much the better of the play, J. Cahill, D. Stone and M. Shepherd adding nine more goals to the team’s score before half-time. St. Mary’s (13) v. Pirates (1). The play of the Pirates team improved after half-time, although the centres had difficulty in sending the ball to the shooting third. The shoots, when they received the ball made good use of their opportunities. D. Stone scored the first goal for St. Mary's in the second half. One of the St. Mary’s shoots was badly bruised from a fall on the asphalt but she allowed it to make little difference to her play 7. J. Cahill scored from a pass from D. Stone, and M. Shepherd scored a good goal from outside the circle. .1. Cahill and M. Shepherd both scored for St. Mary's before the Pirates’ shoots secured the ball. From M. Milne (Pirates), F. Murdoch secured and scored. F. Murdoch scored twice for her team in rapid succession, the second being from a free throw. Another score for Pirates by F. Murdoch was followed by a score for St. Mary's by .1. Cahill. Two more goals were added to St. Mary's score, while F. Murdoch and F. Todd both scored for Pirates before the final whistle. Miss Strathern refereed. BLUFF (20) v. ST. PETER’S (0». Bluff team: E. Albertson, L. Gilson, P. Calder (shoots) ; C. Fowler, B. Bailey, L. Calder (centres) ; I. Vickery, C. Wiig, I. Wiig (defences). St. Peter’s team: M. Patton, G. Hall, J. Perks (shoots) ; G. Jones, M. Jordan, D. Perks (centres) ; V. Bailey, C. Mitchell, M. Brown (defences). This game was played at Bluff and play is well indicated by the score. Bluff players were passing well while St. Peter's had great difficulty in getting the ball past the opposing defences. L. Gilson scored 12 goals, P. Calder 4 and E. Albertson 4. Mr K. A. Johnston refereed. INTERMEDIATE. ROSEDALE (10) v. COLLEGIATE (0). Rosedale team: T. Ritchie, M. Hunt, M. Hunt (shoots); L. Wilkes, I. C’olquhoun, R. Brown (centres); K. Kent, W. Colquhoun, E. Williams (defences). Collegiate team: M. Godward, P. Arnott, M. Turnbull, W. Stevenson, R. Johnson, L. Gilchrist, R. Lincoln. Collegiate took the field with only seven players, the play of the team being seriously affected. With two more players, Collegiate would naturally have increased their score but it is doubtful whether they would have secured a win against the Rosedale team. The Rosedale players were stronger in every third and with more careful passing should have obtained a great many more goals. Collegiate’s defences played a good game but the centres and shoots were weak. Rosedale players have a tendency to overguard. The half time score was 4 — o in favour of Rosedale, play improving considerably in the second half. Mr Dennis controlled the game. RATA (10) v. ’KIWI (7). Rata team: T. Mac Ewan, F. Basstian, J. Scandrett (shoots) ; B. Swan, P. Gow, A. Raines (centres) ; J. Davis, R. Stuckey, G. Griffiths (defences). Collegiate team: J. Hilton, D. Lainchbury, W. Lindsay (shoots) ; P. Russell, J. Farmer, D. Sheffelbien (centres) ; M. Collins, V. Myers, L. Thomas (defences). Play in- the first half was slow and uninteresting, but improved considerably as the game progressed. There was a marked ,improvement towards the end of the first half in the passing of the Rata team. In the first half Kiwi shoots were unable to score when they obtained the ball. After half time their shooting became more accurate. The half-time score was s—l5 —1 in favour of •Rata. Mr Kinross refereed. THIS WEEK’S MATCHES.
