LADIES’ HOCKEY

(By

“Long Corner.”)

NEW SEASON OPENS

CHANGES IN ADMINISTRATION

The 1929 hockey season has begun in earnest now’ and the prospects of a successful vear seem good. As far as the administrative side of the association is concerned, the absence of Mr Peter Gilfedder and Miss C. McGregor from the positions of presidency and secretaryship, will appear strange during the season after such a long association with those duties. Mr L. S. O'Sullivan, M.A., has always taken a keen interest in hockey and last year represented the Western District Sub-Association, as well as acting occasionally as referee, and as president of the association he should be able to boost hockey very successfully. Mr Gilfedder has vacated the office of president in order that he may devote more time to the organization of the proposed South African tour. In connection with that it seems fairly likely that the tour will eventuate. If it does, Southland is certain to be well represented for nationally the Southland standard of play is high. But it is understood that 20 players will form the team. Southland should be able to have at least three players to represent it in the team. Wednesday’s Matches. Five learns arc. entered in the Wednesday competition and Winton, Collegiate A, Technical and Union played in last Wednesday’s games. Winion and Technical provided a good game and although Winton was not a strong rep. team, as M inton teams go, Technical surprised spectators by the good defence they put up. School teams, such as Technical, High School and Primary teams, always suffer from the fact that every year old members are forced to drop out and new players have to be recruited from the younger ranks. Tech’s backs are stronger than their forwards although the latter initiated several promising movements in the course of the game. Several of the mainstays of the Winton team are back and one player whom it is pleasing to see back is Mrs Baird (nee K. Horner) who received a transfer from the Ohai Club at Tuesday night’s meeting of the Association. Misses M. Watson and Huia Horner were also back and were able to put in some good combination and the Winton club is fortunate in retaining the interests of Misses M. Balch, B. Egerton, K. Hamilton and M. Lodge. Misses B and V. Robb, although new to the game of hockey, are well-known in athletic circles and their fast times should be of much value.

The Collegiate—Union match, although rather monotonous at first, later developed into a most interesting game. Collegiate began to regain all their old style towards the end of the game and it can be seen that ■they will form the same smashing combination as last year. Union has been augumented by several additions from last year's High School team among which are Misses L. Fraser, J. Chalmers and M. Woods.

Fixtures For To-day. Although the closing date for entries for the competitions was fixed for the 11th, clubs have not followed the regulations of the Hockey Association and as ' a consequence, fixtures have not been arranged. All that has been possible to be done has been to arrange a friendly game between Union and Collegiate for to-day to be played at Queen’s Park. If no other teams enter, it will be impossible to run a competition. Last year the Saturday competition was the most popular and as many as four matches were occasionally played in the afternoon as well as school matches in the morning. If clubs are going to enter teams, it is only courtesy to let the officials on the association know at the appointed date. Referees* Association. Southland hockey is fortunate in having the services of a band of such willing and efficient referees as it has, and this year it is hoped that a Referees’ Association will be formed. All referees are invited to attend the next meeting of the executive of the Southland Association in the Y.M.C.A. rooms on Tuesday, April 30, when that question and also the matter of obtaining uniformity on ruling will be discussed.
