DRASTIC CUT
PROPOSALS FOR DISARMAMENT.
RUSSIAN SCHEME OUTLINED.
Geneva, April 17.
The Disarmament Commission has commenced its discussion on the Russian proposal for a reduction of 50 per cent, in armaments.
General Longovoi said the Soviet's project aimed at a greater reduction by the big Powers which were capable of becoming more aggressive militarily than the smaller Powers, whose armaments were purely defensive. “We provide for the abolition of bombing planes anti dirigibles, the limitation of the size of motors in aeroplanes in order that they may be purely defensive; also Io limit industries capable of producing gas chemicals and bacteria for use in war,” he said. "Finally, we provide for international control for the purposes of establishing disarmament. Our proposals provide for the complete abolition of tanks and heavy artillery, the suppression of naval aircraft carriers, and a gradual replacement of battleships by 10,000 ton vessels within thirteen years, the abolition of poisonous gas warfare and the curtailment of military budgets.”—Australian Press Association.
