SHIELDS TO EDENDALE AND SOUTH

ALL SOUTHLAND REPRESENTED

The tenth annual athletic meeting of the Invercargill and Suburban Schools’ Sports Association was held on Rugby Park yesterday. The weather was all that could be desired in the morning, but in the afternoon rain threatened and fell before the final event was got off. The meeting was characterized by excellent organization on the part of the teachers and there was not a moment’s delay throughout the day. Thirty-seven schools from all over Southland were represented, and it was gratifying to see how well some of the country schools fared. Edendale, YVaituna, Greenhills and Woodlands all did exceptionally well. While the teachers were present at the sports in very large numbers to render assistance the attendance of parents was very meagre. The Girls’ Shield was won by. South with 39 points. Middle was a good second with 36 points and Waituna third with 30 points. The other schools to score well were St. George (18), North (17) and Greenhills (15). There was very keen competition for the Boys’ Shield, which was won by Edendale with 30 pointe. Waihopai came second with 28 points and Marist third with 25. Middle and Woodlands each gained 15. The cup donated by Mr A. C. Gardner for competition among country schools was won by Waituna and the cup for most points in solo skipping by Greenhills. The outstanding senior boy was H. Mawdsley,' of Edendale, who both in height and in ability was head and shoulders above the others. He secured the medal donated by the Amateur Sports Trust for the champion boy over 13 and under 15. Mr G. Munro's medal for the champion junior boy was won by W. Jones, of Woodlands. Country competitors were also successful in winning the girls’ championships. M. Withington, of Waituna, carried off the senior medal, and her sister, E. Withington, secured Mr B. C. Galloway’s medal for the junior championship. Detailed results are:—-
