IN TOWN AND OUT
NEWS OF THE DAY. Frank! Questioned why he decided to go an unusual route home on a certain night, defendant in a case at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon replied: "I was riding without a light.—as a matter of fact, I was dodging the police.” * Huge Strawberries.
Times reporters gasped with astonishment yesterday when a box was opened in their room and strawberries the size of golf balls were displayed. These strawberries were grown outdoors by Mrs T. J. Kent, Victoria street, Richmond Grove. They are some of the second crop and Mrs Kent states that the first crop were much larger. “I brought them in just to show you what we can do in Southland,” was her comment.
Dangerous Practice. A cyclist suffered a nasty fall yesterday through coming into collision with piping that was protruding from the end of a lorry which was parked at the kerbside. The injured man drew the attention of a reporter to this dangerous practice by lorry drivers. In the present instance the pipes not only protruded about nine feet over the roadway, but at the other end protruded over the footpath, being a menace to pedestrians as well as to cyclists.
Showgrounds For Soccer. It Is understood that as the result of representations by the Southland Football Association, the A. and P. showgrounds will be available for soccer this season, members of the Smithland Cricket Association offering no objections to the playing of soccer football on the cricekt area. At Saturday’s meeting of the A. and P. Association the request by the Football Association was negatived, but this decision. will no doubt be reversed.
