PUBLIC HALL

NORTH .INVERCARGILL SOCIETY

SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of the North Invercargill Public Hall Society was held last evening, Mr J. H. Kissell presiding over a good attendance of members. The annual report read by the secretary, Mr J. P. Scott, stated inter alia: — The work of the committee during the year ended March 31, has proceeded along the same lines as in the previous year, and from the nett results, it may be claimed to have been fairly successful throughout. Notwithstanding the inevitable ciashings with the dates of the various counter attractions and other handicaps, the attendances at the various functions has been well maintained. For the practical support thus accorded its efforts, the committee wishes to record its heartiest thanks to the public and in doing so, would convey the assurance that it is their constant endeavour to give something by way of fair value in return for the patronage given so liberally from time to time. Although the attendances at the euchre tournaments have fallen off considerably during the summer months, these parties continue as a weekly event, the enjoyment of which has in no way diminished, and it is hoped that with the coming winter, they may return to that former popularity among card players. The weekly dance, another feature of the year’s programme, was very well attended during the latter months of 1928. An item which has come to be regarded as an annual event—“ The Old Timers’ Concert”—was again staged and proved very enjoyable. The annual carnival, which is the big effort, of the season, this year featured a princess contest for which there were two entries —Miss Eileen Small (Southern Cross Princess) and Miss M. Jarvis (Sporting Princess). The contest was keenly pursued by their respective committees and the nett result of this combined effort represented an addition to the hall funds of £176. Miss Jarvis was duly crowned queen at a function specially arranged. The financial position of the society, as disclosed by the balance-sheet, is shown to be sound, in that there is a credit balance at the bank of £75 0/9 and the surplus of assets over liabilities are approximately £l3OO. The year’s working showed a profit of £162.

The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year: President (pro tern), Mr J. H. Kissell; vice-presidents, Messrs W. Atley and J. H. Sadlier; committee, Messrs A. Allen, E. J. Hunt, J. Gallagher, E. J. Rowe and S. Wall; secretary, Mr J. P, Scott; ladies’ committee,■ Mesdames Archer, Atley, Colquhoun, Kissell, Strathern, Woodward and Wall.
