RESISTED ARREST
SAMOAN CHIEF. TO BE IMPRISONED IN NEW ZEALAND. REPLY TO THE HON. O. F. NELSON. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, December 21. It was stated to-day in reply to the Hon. O. F. Nelson’s comment that the Samoan chief, Tamasese, was sentenced to six months* imprisonment by the Judge of the High Court of Western Samoa on a charge of resisting arrest and an order was made for his imprisonment in New Zealand. The authority under which he is being transferred to New Zealand is section 210 of the Samoan Act, 1927, which reads: Every person sentenced to imprisonment or committed to prison for six months or more, may, by a warrant under the hand of the Administrator and the Seal of Samoa, be transferred to some prison in New Zealand, named or described in the warrant. It is stated, on good authority, therefore, that the warrant issued is not a deportation warrant of a political prisoner as alleged by the Hon. O. F. Nelson but a warrant for the imprisonment of an ordinary prisoner.
