SHOPPING HOURS
CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR. “Are the shops open to-morrow?” “What time do the shops close to-day?” These are some of the questions frequently asked during the holiday season, but the responses made are generally not too illuminating. Indeed, it is surprising how ill-equipped with the necessary information is the average Christmas shopper. The information appended should be useful to prospective shoppers, and, as the position of the law relating to shop closing is not always quite clear, the particulars given may be helpful to shopkeepers as well:— Grocers, Drapers, Clothiers, Tailors, Fancy Goods, Jewellers, Chemists, Hardware, Crockery, Book and Stationery and Furniture Shops:—These shops will observe the following closing hours and holidays: Christmas Week:—Monday (Christmas Eve) close 10 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday (Christmas Day and Boxing Day) holidays. Thursday and Friday, close 5.30 p.m. Saturday, close at 9 p.m. New Year Week:—Monday (New Year’s Eve), close 10 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (New Year’s Day, January 2 and 3), whole holidays. Friday, January 4, close 5.30 p.m. Saturday, close 9 p.m. Butchers. Christmas Week: —Monday (Christmas Eve), close 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday (Christmas Day and Boxing Day), full holiday. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, close 5.30 p.m. New Year Week:—Monday (New Year’s Eve), close 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday (New Year’s Day and January 2), full holiday. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, close at 5.30 p.m. Pork Butchers:—These shops may remain open until 9 p.m. on December 24 and 31. On all other days they will observe the same closing hours as butchers. Tobacconists and Hairdressers. Christmas Week:—Monday (Christmas Eve), close at 11 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday (Christmas Day and Boxing Day), full holidays. Thursday and Friday, close at 6 p.m. Saturday, shops will be kept open until 9 p.m. New Year Week:—Monday (New Year’s Eve), close at 11.30 p.m. Tuesday (New Year’s Day), full holiday. Wednesday, shops will be open until 12 noon. Thursday and Friday, close at 6 p.m. Saturday, the shops will remain open until 9 : p.m.
