GORE BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL. Last night’s meeting of the Gore Borough Council was attended by the Mayor, Mr. D. McDougall, Councillors J. Brownlie, T. Sim, W. D. Shelton, H. Black, M. Hay. T. Bennet, W. McKinna, C. R. B. Wilkinson, W. K. Hamilton and J. A. Baldie. Correspondence. The secretary of the Riversdale branch of the Farmers’ Union wrote stating that at its last meeting a discussion arose out of comments made by passing tourists at the appearance of Gore. Country people, who made Gore their centre, were rather proud of its progress and of the way in which the affairs of the town were managed; also, being used to its appearance, did not see it from an outsider’s point of view, and resented it being unfavourably compared with some northern towns of a similar size. He had been instructed by the branch to suggest that as there were quite a number of citizens interested in beautifying projects, and many retired farmers were residing in Gore, it might be possible to form a Beautifying Society or similar organization and to stimulate an interest in making Gore’s appearance an indication of its progress. If the suggestion was of any value and the council would take the initiative in the movement and desired the co-operation of Riversdale branch of the Farmers’ Union it would be pleased to assist in any way possible and would endeavour to interest other Eastern District branches in the proposal.—Letter to lie on table. The District Highways Council advised that the test of the tar made on behalf of the council disclosed that the figures for specific gravity and tar acids were somewhat high. In other respects the sample complied with the British Road Board’s specification for a number one tar. —Received. S. Newell applied for a crossing into his property in Wigan Street.—Granted on usual conditions. The Power Board applied for permission to erect supply wires on the council’s street lighting poles for the purpose of supplying a consumer in Main street.—Granted. The Salvation Army applied for the council’s usual donation of £lO towards the band’s funds. —-Granted. The secretary of the Gore Boy Scouts applied for the use of the Domain at Whisky Creek for the purpose of holding a Scouts camp from December 26 to January 2.—Granted. Jane France applied for a crossing to her property in Elizabeth street. —Granted on usual conditions. The Vacuum Oil Company applied for permission to duplicate its petrol pipe line running from the railway siding to the installation in Bury street. —Granted subject to the regulations being complied with. S. G. Inder advised that the water on his property was becoming polluted owing to the council depositing night-soil on the adjoining sections. Unless this matter was remedied immediately he would have to take further steps and in the meantime held the council responsible for any damages incurred.—Referred to the Works Committee with power to act. General. A recommendation by the Finance Committee that street lights be erected in Preston and Lyne streets was adopted. It was decided to cut down the grass on both sides of main street north. It was decided to tar-seal the footpaths at the approaches to the traffic bridge and on the west side of Main street north. Councillor Shelton reported that the motor camp on the East Gore domain would be completed within the week, and it was decided to advise the Southland Motor Association of this fact. It was decided to put down a crossing from the athenaeum to the Club Hotel on Norfolk street.
