Mr D. McDougall, M.P., returned to Gore on Saturday evening. „ Mr George H. Aitken has been appointed sole teacher at the Wairekiki School. Mr G. Cruickshank. S.M.,- returned to Invercargill by the express yesterday. Miss Christina S. Jaffray has been appointed assistant teacher at the Tokonui School. Mr W. C. Leys,’ managing editor of the Auckland Star, returned to the north by the express yesterday afternoon. Mr P. Brett, manager of the New Zealand Press Agency in London, left for the north by the express yesterday afternoon. Mr T. W. Preston and Mr Horace Smith left with a Government survey party on the last trip of the Awarua for the Sounds, where they will be engaged for the next three months. Mr S. H. Scott, of the staff of the Department of Agriculture at Invercargill, has' been advised of his transfer to a position in the Canterbury district, and will be leaving shortly to take up his residence at Timaru. Sir Harry Lauder, the famous actorsinger, who was in Invercargill yesterday, is spending a holiday with Mr Donald Macdonald, of Edendale. Sir Harry, accompanied by his niece, Miss Lauder, came out from England by the Tamaroa and arrived at Edendale on Saturday evening. By the Makura there arrived Zane Grey and Captain Mitchell, en route for Mercury Island, reports a Wellington Press Association message. They left for Thames by two trains. Later they hope to go on to the Great Barrier to try fishing there also. If their luck is not good, the Bay of Islands will again be visited, and later the party go to Taupo. The Education Board announces that the following have been appointed probationary assistants at the schools mentioned Miss Mabel A. Carrol, East Gore; Miss Ellen A. Elley, Invercargill South; Miss May L. Fordyce, Riverton; Miss Jeanny S. Jones, Waihopai; Miss Hannah McMaster, Gore; Miss Kathleen M. Prendergast, Waikiwi; Mr David R. Roberts, Otautau; Miss Ethel M. Robertson, Winton; Miss Lillian C. S. Smith, Invercargill South; Miss Mavis L. K. Veitch, St. George; Mr Walter G. Wright, Invercargill Middle. Members of the Gore Borough Council last evening accepted the opportunity of congratulating the Mayor, Mr D. McDougall, upon his having been elected to represent the Mataura electorate. Councillor J. Brownlie said that he was sure Mr McDougall would make good in the House and that he would take as keen an interest in the electorate as he had done in the affairs of the borough. Councillor Wilkinson mentioned that it was the first occasion that a Mayor of Gore had been returned for the Mataura electorate. Each member of the council tendered his congratulations, and in reply the Mayor stated that he would do his best for his constituency, for the Borough of Gore and for the country as a whole.
