ITALIAN SCHOOLS

UNIFORM TEXT BOOKS. MUSSOLINI’S LATEST IDEA. (Rec. 12.5 a.m.) Rome, December 16. Mussolini has planned uniform text books for all schools in Italy. The Vatican organ Osservatore Romano says that teachers were allowed certain latitude before the Fascist revolution, provided the teaching did not conflict with the State’s interest in temporal matters or the Church's in spiritual matters. The heresies of the freedom of conscience and speech of the Press came in with liberalism. The Fascist regime rudely shook them, but existing text books continue to teach them; also, many teachers are still infected with doctrines contrary to religious faith, Christian morals and security of the State. The Osservatore calls attention to the continued teaching of the freedom of conscience and speech, especially the antipapal bias of certain history books. Nevertheless. the Osservatore fears that uniformity of books will prevent parents and children indulging special preferences in education.—Times Cable.
