GIRL GUIDES. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Wyndham branch of the Girl Guide’s Committee was held on Tuesday and attended by the following: Mesdames W. O. C. McKay, H. Hunter, A. Lindsay, Misses L. Marsh, M. Baird and P. G. Ford. Correspondence was received from the Southland Association and the secretary regarding Guide’s first class tests, and examiners were appointed for the various divisions included in the test. Mr. M. Rice, who had been in attendance at the river on the previous Saturday, volunteered to instruct the Guides in the art of swimming, and on the motion of Miss Marsh and Mrs. Malcolm, Mr. Rice’s services were accepted with thanks. This will be a great assistance to the company, as guides are not allowed to bathe unless accompanied by a life-saver with a bronze medal, or a life- saver with a swimmers badge, or a responsible person who can swim 50 yards, and has a knowledge of artificial respiration, according to the nature of the bathing place. Picnic. On Saturday last the Wyndham Girl Guide company and members of the Association held a picnic to Cook’s Bush. The morning was wet, and a start was not made as early as planned, but the party got away about mid-day, and by that time the grass had dried and the spot selected for the day s outing was in splendid order. Preparations were, on arrival, made for lunch and the lady members linked up with the various patrols and were their guests at lunch. Camp fires were built, and in a very short time potatoes were roasted, savoloys heated, and billies were boiling merrily, while lettuces were prepared at the river’s edge. Each of the four patrols performed these duties on behalf of the whole party, and carried out the various duties in a creditable manner. Unfortunately a storm came on just as the picnic party were arranging for tea, and a hurried packing of eat bags, etc was necessary, prior to the arriving of the cars to convey the party home again. The company and association are indebted to Messrs H. Hunter, G. Hunter, W. O. C. McKay. M. Rice and L. B. Borrow for the use of their cars. Sale of Work. The Redan-Mokoreta Branch of the P.W.M.U. held a very successful jumble sale in the office of Mr G. Richardson on Tuesday, the result being the collecting of £l3 for the fund, The roil of this guild at present numbers 20, of whom Mesdames A. C. Wells and T. A. Robinson are joint leaders and Mrs. Wm. Scott is treasurer. School Concert. The annual school concert of the Mimihau School was held in the Ridges Public Hall on Friday evening, there being a large attendance present. A most enjoyable programme of children’s items, the first half being entirely by the children, and the manner in which they carried out their various parts must have been most gratifying to the instructors, the school staff. The second half of the programme was provided by local performers, and the items in all cases were of a high nature. At a suitable interval Mr S. Rice, member of the Southland Education Board, presented to each child a book, and hoped they would all experience a bright and happy holiday. Attendance certificates were handed out to Jack Arnott, William Frame, and Joseph Dunstan, while Clair McLaren received a certificate for running second in the 50 yards race in connection with the school sports. Supporting remarks, complimenting the school staff on their work during the year, were added by Messrs Frame and Smith. At a suitable interval during the speechifying all present stood in silence for one minute in respect to the memory Of the late Mr Milne, who had died a few days previous, and who some short time ago was on the teaching staff of the Mimih.au School. The floor was later cleared for dancing to music supplied by Mrs Leckie’s Orchestra, and Miss and Mr Caldwell.
