CRICKET

SATURDAY’S GAMES SECOND ROUND OF SENIOR MATCHES COLTS IN STRONG POSITION Competition games were resumed on Saturday afternoon in perfect weather conditions. In the senior competition the second round (two-day matches* was commenced and some interesting cricket was played. The Appleby-Union game was one of low scoring, and although Appleby established a first innings’ lead, either side has practically an equal chance. I.C.C. A, the Colts team, commenced badly against the B team, but thanks to a good innings by Nisbet, retrieved the position sufficiently to set the B team a big task. They failed, and the A’s led on the first innings by 62 runs. Fogo and Johnston were conspicuous for fine bowling during the afternoon, the former taking seven for 37 for I.C.C. B and Johnston securing five for 28 against Union. APPLEBY v. UNION The game was played at Biggar street ground on a good wicket. Appleby took first strike, but shaped poorly and were dismissed under two hours for 101 runs. Carson was the only batsman to display any form, his 35 not out being the result of clean and vigorous hitting. Union's attack was materially assisted by good fielding. Union’s reply with the bat was even poorer than Appleby’s, the side totalling only--88 runs. Dixon was top-scorer with 49 more than half the total. Johnston was in good form with the ball and wound up with the splendid figures of five for 28. Appleby’s out-cricket was not good, several chances being dropped, while the ground fielding left a lot to be desired. Appleby’s second innings was - commenced before ‘stumps.” the score-board reading 33 for two wickets at the close of the day’s play. The match is at an interesting stage and will be concluded next Saturday.

Total 101 Bowling Analysis:—Bird, 10 overs, one maiden, 32 runs, two wickets; Dixon, 11 overs, two maidens, 37 runs, three wickets: Anderson, 6 overs, 20 runs, two wickets; A. Hamilton, two overs, three runs, two wickets. —Second Innings.—

maidens, 26 runs, two wickets; Johnston, 12.5 overs, 3 maidens, 28 runs, 5 wickets; A. Poole, 9 overe, 24 runs, two wickets; Groves, 6 overs, 2 maidens, 8 runs, one wicket. I.C.C. A V. I.C.C. B The showgrounds wicket was in good order for this match. The A team batted first and scored 157 Nisbet (85) saving the side from a rout by batting fearlessly, though luckily, at a stage when runs were badly wanted. Six wickets had fallen for 31 runs and the B’s looked like having a field day. First Dr. Brown and then Cox helped Nisbet to stay the rot and by two good partnerships (the seventh and eighth wickets) a respectable total was assured. Nisbet’s innings was vigorous in the extreme. He took risks and was rewarded. Included in his total were four sixes and nine fours. Fogo bowled well, sending down 15 overs and securing seven wickets for 37 runs. The B team made a very poor response, “Extras” top-scoring with 25 runs. Dr. Brown and D. Agnew trundled well for the A team. The Colts batted again and at “stumps” had lost two wickets for 74 runs. Thus they have 136 runs on with eight wickets in hand. Following are details: I.C.C. A.
