BOXING
DEMONSTRATION AT GORE. SOME GOOD BOUTS. (From Our Correspondent.) Since the formation of the Gore Boxing and Gymnastic Club very keen interest has been taken in the art of ringcraft by the youths and boys in the Eastern District and in addition to the large numbers attending the classes at Gore, strong classes have been formed at Mat aura and Riversdale. With a view to demonstrating the progress made under their instructor, Mr W. F. North, a number of trial bouts were staged in the Gore Town Hall on Thursday evening. This attracted a very large number of club members and others interested in the sport, who had every reason to be pleased with the excellent showing made by a number of the contestants. In most cases the lads were very evenly matched and their efforts were loudly applauded. Mr A. S. Fleming (vice-president) was announcer, Mr North referee, Mr W. Peirson judge, Mr Pollock timekeeper, and Messrs Coop and Herbert seconds. The tryout served a double purpose, in that it got the lads used to the ring and at the same time demonstrated to the public the excellent progress made. Mr G. F. Mirams thanked the lads for appearing, particularly the numbers from Mataura and Riversdale, and also all those who had assisted towards the success of the evening. He stated that further demonstrations of a like nature would be held from time to time, and concluded by complimenting Mr North on his very fine work with the boys.
