NOTED SCIENTIST

SIR DOUGLAS MAWSON AT WELLINGTON. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, November 20. Sir Douglas Mawson arrived from Sydney this morning. While in England he made investigations with regard to a suitable ship and equipment for carrying on further coastal surveys in the South Australian region, a matter he hopes to see finalized during the coming year. Discussing the various Aantarctic expeditions he said there was no question that Byrd’s expedition might be expected to return with an immense amount of valuable information relating to the Ross Sea area, and very valuable results should accrue because of the splendid equipment and good management evident. The Wilkins expedition on the other hand was limited in personnel and equipment, and taking with this a limitation of the base it was not likely to accumulate a great deal of information of scientific value, although it might be able to chart some of the unknown coastlines.
