BLUFF BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Bluff Borough Council was held last evening, there being present the Mayor, Dr. J. Torrance, Councillors J. S. A. McDougall, W. B. Dixon, A. E. Budd, A. C. McKillop, H. W. Newman and J. C. Imlay. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor G. R. George. The secretary of the Bluff Cricket Club wrote asking that the proposed new fence along the recreation grobnd be gone on with as soon as possible. After that work was completed, the club would be obliged if the playing area could be put in order. —Left to Mayor and Town Clerk. Incidentally it was mentioned that at present it was not known what funds were available. The Southland Motor Cycle Club wrote asking permission to hold its annual hill climb on Bluff hill on February 16 next. An assurance was given that there would be no unnecessary noise or excessive speed in or through the borough. —Agreed to. The secretary of the Bluff Harbour Board wrote stating that his board Repudiated all liability for damage to council buildings through blasting operations. No blasting was done on the date mentioned in the council’s letter to the board. —Received. The secretary of the fire brigade wrote asking for the approval of the appointment of W. Hardy to the brigade vice W. Gilson who will be absent for some time. —Agreed. Mr S. M. Corkhill, borough engineer of Invercargill, wrote accepting the council’s offer to supply 2,000 tons of road metal. — Received. Mr Gordon Reed, on behalf of Alfred John Silvester, wrote with reference to damage to the extent of £25 to property occupied by him through the bursting of certain wa er drains. At the expiration of a month, action would be commenced against the council. He also wrote on behalf of Mr; Mary A. Silvester claiming the cost of 25 loads of soil or the supply of the soil.—Both letters were received. A letter was received from the Bluff Harbour Board stating that the board had under consideration, a proposal to instal a two-inch waterpipe in Bann street between Slaney street and Brandon street, in place of the existing one-inch pipe. The letter suggested that the council pay the difference on a three-inch pipe in order to provide water for fire service purposes. The cost would be about £3O. —Amount to be placed on the estimate for next year, council to charge a rental of 1/- per year to the board. Mr N. W. McGorlick wrote asking for a rebate of £2 5/- being rent of the town hall for the benefit concert given for Mr Tom Finnerty.—Agreed to. The Rev. Moses Ayrton w’rote stating that the Methodist Church Ladies' Guild proposed holding a sale of work in the hall and suggested a reduction in rental.— Agreed to, the charge to be £2 per night. Accounts amounting to £949 w’ere passed for payment subject to examination by the Finance Committee.
