CASH ON DELIVERY
UNPROFITABLE SYSTEM. London, September 7. The Devon and Exeter Gazette has been making inquiries relative to the agitation in New Zealand against the C.O.D. system, which is employed by some British firms in their business with the Dominion. The manager of one of the largest firms in London said that although he supplied New Zealanders with goods his business with that Dominion was so small that it was not worth carrying on. On an average his firm sent six parcels a week to New Zealand on the cash-on-delivery system. He knew of no firms which covered New Zealand with mailed catalogues. He expressed the opinion that it did not pay English firms to deal with New Zealand on that system of trade. Catalogues were supplied to people living in New Zealand only when they were requested. The manager of another firm said that the New Zealand objection corresponded with the view that was held in England when the cash-on-delivery system was first introduced as an internal system. It was said then that it w’ould be detrimental to small traders in the country, but actually it had been proved that it played a very small part in the business of large firms. With his own firm business on the cash-on-delivery basis was highest for the first week or two,, when the system was novel, but since then it had gone down increasingly. This system of selling added considerably to the price of small articles.
