MINING TRAGEDY
WORKMEN OVERCOME BY FUMES. PLUCKY RESCUE EFFORT. Sydney, November 13. A miner, Joseph Bedford, was overcome by black damp while sinking a coal shaft near Wallsend, Newcastle. A man named Thomas working nearby was attracted by Bedford’s young brother’s alarm. He went down the shaft despite the deadly fumes and was twice forced to come up owing to their effects. The third time he managed to get a rone round Bedford and hauled him to the surface dead.—Australian Press Association.
