TO THE ELECTORS OF MATAURA. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN—Twenty years ago you did me the honour of electing me as your representative in Parliament. During that long period New Zealand, in common with the world generally, has passed through stirring and difficult times; but our Dominion, notwithstanding the war and its aftermath, has materially progressed in all that makes for the welfare and happiness of the people. The part I have taken in assisting this progress is well-known to you all; and it is, therefore, quite unnecessary for me to dwell upon my past actions in this regard. Suffice it to say that the Legislation dealing with Labour, Mining, Marine and Pensions has been greatly improved during the eight years I had had charge of these Departments. That this is the case has been fully acknowledged by both my political friends and opponents. On every possible occasion I have endeavoured to further the interests of the Province of Southland, and have watched with care the interests of my constituents especially, no matter what their political colour may have been. As my health has not been good of late, I have taken an extended holiday on the recommendation of my medical advisers, and am pleased to say have greatly improved—so much so that I hope to return to New Zealnad in full vigour within a few weeks. As the General Election will take place before my return, I confidently place myself in your hands for re-election. If, in your opinion, my past services to the Electorate and the Dominion justify you in again returning me to represent you in the House of Representatives. I shall serve you to the best of my ability as I have done during the past 20 years. If re-elected, I shall continue to support Mr Coates as I regard his policy and that of his Party as the most sensible, businesslike, progressive and humanitarian that has been submitted to the electors of the Dominion. As a leader Mr Coates has proved himself most capable, honest and straight forward. He has maintained the great traditions of his Party, and pushed on vigorously and with courage the great business and financial concerns of the State, sustaining and advancing the humanitarian legislation to the utmost practicable extent, and in every way furthering the welfare of our beloved Dominion. With the utmost confidence I again place my services at your disposal, feeling satisfied that although I cannot at present address you individually in each centre of the electorate, as I have always done in the past, you will again return me at the head of the poll, remembering my past record on your behalf.
