ROWING
THE COMING SEASON
(By
“Junius.”)
Rowing is by this time w’ell under way in Southland. Most of the clubs have held their openings and the members for the moat part have settled down to training for the four regattas of the season. The majority of the clubs are in a strong position and a good year can be looked forward to. Club races are being got under way and the selection of the regatta teams should follow shortly. Last year the Invercargill Club members met with more success than previously although no club races were held owing to the late start with training and the bed weather. J. B. Pasco was a most successful stroke, coming through the season unbeaten in his class. The club holds the following trophies: —K. P. Cup, McKenzie Memorial Casket, and the Lochella Challenge Cup. The club commences the year with a credit balance of £32 1/7 and an active membership of 35. The Railway Club slipped back to some extent last season donations won amounting to only £lO 4/6 as against £33 17/8 for the previous year. More enthusiasm, however, has been displayed this season and better things can be looked for from its members. Only one club race was got off during the year—the President’s Fours —which was won by C. Henderson’s crew. The club’s racing plant is in good order and the practice plant has been overhauled. A new practice pair is expected to arrive shortly. The Railway Club commences the year with a credit balance of £165 5/-. The Awarua Club met with less success last year also, prize money won decreasing by £5O. Several new members have joined up and two or three old timers intend taking up the game again. The club races started off with a flourish, but interest dwindled and they have not yet been completed. It is probable that two senior fours will be available this year, if things turn out as anticipated, although C. Hunter is the only member of last year’s senior four remaining actively with the club. The juniors are strong numerically and good teams will be available. The club’s plant has been supplemented by the purchase of two new practice fours and all that is now required to bring the whole plant up-to-date are a few sets of oars. With the arrival of this equipment the club will be in a particularly fortunate position. The club starts the year with a credit balance of £144 10/9 and an active membership of 39. | The Riverton club has opened its season and a prosperous year appears to be ahead. It possesses all the requisite plant and a good number of young members who have already made their mark in the sport.
